I know you know what they say they dont know about Volvo

Hello again my friends. This week brought us a 2002 Volvo V70 with a single evap code for small leak. We were excited to use 11.2 on our Modis on this, our first, Volvo victim. After a little learning curve it became apparent that we needed a chart and some more info. The Modis identified the "P0442" as a 400-C?! No one seems to know what this is. No chart for these codes. Shop Key didn't help much so the guys at tech support sent some more info. We also called support for the EELD (two days ago) and they haven't responded yet. We are still unsure of this system operates. Specifically, how do you seal it. Is there a vent? The canister and pump are in a very bad spot over the rear axle. The guys at EELD support jokingly stated "we dont want to know how these work", and the fella who we talked to was supposed to talk to a guy who might know (Glenn?). Anyway, while we wait for their call, do any of you have a technique to share on these systems for doing a basic system/leak check? They are going to return next week and we are going to install a new OE cap. I wanted to give it the once over, one more time, and learn it, when she comes back. Thanks again, Neil

    Hi Neil,

I'm pretty sure this system is just like a GM vehicle. It has a vent valve near the canister that needs to be closed to leak check it. Did the Modis list a Vent Valve, or Canister Closed Valve in Functional Tests? If it did, smoke the system until smoke appears out the vent, then seal it with the scanner. The flow meter will tell you if it's really leaking (I'm sure you already know this though).

If the Modis doesn't list a Vent Valve then close it mechanically(plug it, pinch the hose...whatever) and check for a leak that way. Hopefully it's a plumbing problem and will show up easily.

Please post the results. I don't have too much time in with the new Volvo coverage and would like to what you think of it. The few Volvos that I've been able to plug into had EVAP coverage, but it was only a couple of cars.

So you know, the guy at the EELD Help Line just had an operation, so he's not on his full game at the moment. Glenn is overseas and won't be returning calls anytime soon.

I had an 04 Saturn vue 4cyl. this week with a code for small leak detected. Couldn't believe it, no functional tests for a Saturn ? So I turned the key on and grounded the vent solenoid vith my vantage (amp meter) and smoked it. Found smoke at the gas cap (never touch the gas cap until after you smoke it). Found smoke at the cap and about 40/1000th flow rate. Grab the cap, it's striped out so it won't tighten , new cap, no more smoke.

Thanks guys. Well, the car did return today and we had an OE cap ready. However, instead of leaving the car for us as originally planned, they sent their son down to have the cap put on and go. So, we didn't get to dig deeper. Perhaps I'll get another chance to play later. I'll update then. Til then..Neil

I was wondering how you were making out with that.

Definitely update this thread if you end up testing that car.

ECM-400C is Volvo's DTC for a leak in the EVAP system:

            Here the DTC description:

The factory scan tool offers a EVAP system test function:

Also, the "vent valve" is actually a leak detection pump. I attached a pdf-file which explains how the system works:

I don't have or use the factory Volvo tool, SO is all I need . This information comes from an older installation of VADIS.
