    Dirty Maf, Sluggish Van

The vehicle is a 2000 Chevy G3500 with a 5.7. Various drivability complaints including sluggishness a few misfires and backfires ? A throttle snap and I knew something was wrong, very slow response and a hesitation. Timing (cam retard) and fuel pressure were OK so I turned my attention to air flow. Maybe a plugged exhaust. Didn't feel like taking one of those rusted 02s out just yet so I unplugged the MAF and gave it another throttle snap. Much better this time. So much for the plugged exhaust. It seems I rarely ever clean one of these digital MAF sensors, they just seem to fail all together when they go. I gave this one try and collected as much before and after data as I could including looking at the frequency on my Vantage Ultra with the graphing multi meter. The wave is very similar to what you see when scoping an analog MAF. You'll notice the higher frequency achieved after cleaning in the frames below as well as the improved throttle response in the scanner screens.
