secure gateway on chrysler/ ford vehicles

hi all wondering what the official word from snap on is about secure gateway. What is going to be the strategy for addressing the issue? I'm going to be in the market for a new scan tool soon, however i am considering just going oem for the most part. I do understand the increased cost. We deal with alot of newer vehicles from body shops here and the aftermarket doesnt seem to cut it any more.

I have not heard of any word from snap on on what they are going to do about the SGW module.. but that being said, I believe that even with a factory scan tool on some FCA cars you still need to log into the SGW module with the factory tool with a username and password, and then it still only allows access for like a hour, then you must log back into it.

anything is possible...but just know, even the factory scan tool will not be straight forward.

i have ids and fdrs. have used wi tech on j2534 both are very easy to grasp. wi tech you need to be linked to fca server the whole time so i tether my phone if needed. my understanding is that there is the possibility of a model where snap on can have their tool linked to a server that hand shakes on the fca side to allow the tool to work. just wondering if there is any work being done on their end to make this happen. i have heard that both g scan and snap on have submitted their applications to fca to work on a solution.

I Tried to scan a 2018 Chrysler Town and Country with a MS908P and it first needed a Internet Network connection in order to connect to the Autel server to retrieve and download a file in order to be able to scan all modules and read data (without using the 12 and 8 SGM bypass cable) However you cannot perform any bi-directional activation of components or clear codes without the SGM bypass cable. Looks like you can't let your Chinaman tool updates expire if you need to access the Autel Server to download the illusive files you have to get from their server to scan these newer FCA vehicles besides buying the 12 + 8 adapter to do bi-directional and clear codes.

yes, from my understanding, you can only read fault codes, thats it... not even clearing is allowed. of course one may bypass this sgw and have access.

You do have full access to live data. Garbage Out , no garbage in.
Search SGM Bypass on You tube to see a decent video by Flash Performance

Looks like the only USA based seller of the 12+8 adapter I see at this moment is AES wave for like $70. Other than scanning a new Rental Car out of curiosity for testing purposes to verify it will pull codes and view data of all modules , I can't see much of a urgent need actaully get the 12+8 adapter asap, so I decided to order a new one off Ebay as cheaply as possible from China I found for $30 which will take quite a while longer. I don't know if the bypass cable will be relevant for more than 2 or 3 model years, and even after I have the cable to bypass the SGM, I can't see myself pulling center trim and radios out of new model car dashes unless I'm also able to obtain a harness extension kit to relocate the SGMs under dash like a trailer brake module for easier access to the SGM next time I see the vehicle. I don't like the idea that I have to keep my update subscription current in order to access a server and download an illusive file before it can scan and read all modules and data.
Maybe someone from Snap On can try the 12+8 cable on a 2018 or 2019 FCA Rental Car and manually ID it as a 2017 model and let us know if that will suffice as a work around

I like the idea, do you have a link to the one you bought on ebay, or the other link for the 70 $ one??

I was asked by Steve in the past not to post links to other tool company products , however if you go to AES Wave dot com or E bay websites and type in 12 + 8 you will find it . Also on the AES wave site you can click on a good how to video.
Spock would say, "It's only logical to expect we'll soon see SGM module relocation kits available by the time many 2018 models will be coming out of their bumper to bumper warranties."
If you didn't have an Autel platform I wouldn't waste money buying that 12+8 cable, for a different brand scanner unless I heard it will work ID'ing it as an earlier model or can borrow one off another tech with a MaxCyst and try it out.

Well I ordered the Autel 12+8 Adapter cable from a seller in China off E-Bay back in April for only $30 and today I just received a small envelope that contained a half dozen mini lego toy pieces.Even though Ebay will refund my $30 after June 5th , I Guess I should have just ordered it from AES Wave for $70Just glad I didn't order the Harley Davidson cable from China

The seller name had couple letter Z's in it. I'm not positive if it was actually the seller or some crooks stateside who are responsible because some shipper called SpeedPak handles the parcel that has horribly vague tracking information and no parcel weight shown during the start of shipping process either , then after it clears customs stateside, It has a 2nd party WHEREXPRESS takes over and gives new label with a New York return address and gives it to USPS for delivery. So who's to say this 2nd party involved in parcel transit doesn't have crooks working for them with heat guns lifting shipping labels and putting in other envelopes before dropping a bogus parcel at USPS.
I would just stay clear of ordering anything that ships free from China via SpeedPAK that gives an earliest expected delivery date more than 30 days from time ordered with a large window of a month and a half or more from earliest to latest expected delivery date.

The hoops you have to jump through to diagnose 2018+ models. Lol. If the cable you purchased for ur Autel is the 12+8, I saw a few cars that you have to plug it behind the radio. I hope they fix this and we can diagnose through the OBD2 eventually. The way it's done now is an accident waiting to happen.

Well at least you got your cable. E-bay refunded my $30
I wonder if you can manually enter 2018 vehicle as a 2016 or 2017 model with a Snap On Tool, and use the Autel 12+8 cable behind the radio?
I know without using the cable with an Autel Scanner, for the initial scan the tool has to be connected to the internet (Tool having a valid update subscription) and it connects to Autel's server and downloads some sort of FCA DaVinci code, and it will scan all the modules and display codes and data pids, but you cannot activate anything or clear codes without using the SGW bypass cable.
