I currently use a PTP3 as well. I also still service a decent amount of '96-'01 cars too. Anyone out there have a work-a-round for this hole in coverage?

That would be up to Drewtech to fix.An interface can't be faster than the computer behind it.I haven't seen PTP3 or Drewtechs equivalent on any validated interface list from any manufacturer.

Some older GM's need the tech 2 to program reliably. Even the MDI is too fast for some data networks

Sorry pal,23 yrs at a GM dealer says otherwise.I haven't used my Tech2 for programming since the MDI was released and have had no issues at all.
RS232 via RJ45 is just too slow.It was fine when it was all we had,but then so was DOS.

What would I expect to pay for a good used Tech2? Where do you recommend I buy? I would like to fill this hole in GM coverage. Thanks for any info.

I guess you've had better luck then me. Old trail Blazers like to fail programming with the MDI. Also performing theft relearns on old vehicles with the MDI is impossible on some models.

I can only relate my own experience, and so far haven't had a problem.Theft relearns on older vehicles I do with Tech 2,just because I always have.

Hey guys I want yo share my experience on this. I use a cardaq plus2 and the bosch vci for flash programming. I am an AT instructor and mobile tech. I do a lot of flashes. My solution to the problem you are describing has been bench flashing. I dont even waste time trying to flash early 2000s trailblazer s and envoys on car anymore. Go to the junkyard and cut ecm connectors and dlcs from a few vehicles. Get the computers too if you can. On vehicles that allow it, It is a real nice way to work. Give it a shot next time you run into one. I have not had a single one fail since i started doing this.

Tried this on a newer vette becuase it requires a bus tool to only allow certian modules on when flashing pcm long story short failed twice third time fried pcm

What did you try, RAP Kit, programming it on the bench or a combination? Also why was the PCM being programmed and who was on the hook for the fried PCM?

I would like to know more about this also. Bench flashing is not a solution for a lot of newer vehicles. Well it can be done, but not by the method we have been discussing and not in a way that any OE approves of. To be honest I don't know what the problem with the 00-01 trailblazers is, but I know it went away in 02-03 when they switched to the ecm with 2 connectors instead of 3. Yes I know about pulling the lgm and brake fuses. When I have one that fails to complete in the car I always attempt to bench flash it in case it can be recovered without taking the ecu apart. That's how I learned how to deal with the envoy issue.

Just picked up a RAP kit on Saturday. Looking forward to using it. No more trips to Chrysler or Nissan.

I assume RAP kit stands for Rent A Programmer Kit. So does the RAP kit come complete with a Tough book Laptop with the OE program ,a Mobile Hot Spot , USB, and Ethernet cables, or do they just provide the J2534 pass through with a subscription id # and you need to use your own laptop , internet , and download the OE program, etc ?

They provide a box with cables and you supply the pc and network access. They remote in and flash the vehicle through a vpn. Dt is clearly very excited about it and it seems to be going over well but personally I would rather do it myself. I'm curious to see how it pans out in the long run. I dont think the coverage and support could match that of an on site specialist... But I'm not a billion dollar corporation eithet...

I want to do it myself and do it only when I absolutely have to for the least amount of cost likely using a unvalidated Chinese knock off. Hate to reward these carmakers and tool companies always coming up with new and proprietary **** I need to blow money on to fix the cars, and intentionally make it difficult to use a used module.
