Pontiometer signal 5 volt unplugged purpose

Does anyone know the purpose of the above voltage? On a pontiometer signal wire the fixed internal pcm resistor between the 5 volt ref and the signal wire. Only see it when connector is unplugged. There are the pontiometer that does not have it and the ones that do. Both have a voltage sensing circuit inside the pcm used for diagnostics. What is the purpose of the internal resistor between the 5 volt ref and the signal wire. Thanks for your time. Joe

Generally the vehicles wiring diagrams don't show anything inside the ECM.
Generally a Potentiometer sensor is a variable resistor
