    Personality Key List

    Hi, New to forum

Just purchased a used Solus Pro and I'm looking for a vehicle list and personality key numbers to use for the vehicles. Sorry if this sounds a bit dim but new to snap on diagnostics.

I have previously used Bosch, Autodiagnos, IDS and Hella Gutmann before so not new to diagnostics just snap on platform

    Cheers
    Terry..

The key numbers are S - 1, S - 2 etc, I have about 64 of them but don't know exactly how many there are, and in saying this the later platforms don't use keys anymore.

Hi David, you're right as far as you go. Just a couple of things that I've noticed.
The Euro vehicles use the S-personality keys. The North American vehicles use K-personality keys.
They are two different kind of connectors that take the two different types of personality keys.

I got a laugh out of the "bit dim" self diagnostics comment there as I have been using pressure and vacuum gauges and analog multi meters, and eye balls for scanning, LOL, to keep my fleet of Renix 87-89 jeeps running. Old school, nothing dim about it.

I found the 1 page key list (link in this thread) but it says nothing about what the keys do or the years it covers or what is different about the various keys for the same brand like GM or Chrysler that has several keys for each.

I just bought my first MT-2500 batch of hardware on Ebay but do not have any keys yet. Are they an absolute must and how do I figure out which ones I need and why? I will be starting out with the Jeeps, a 96 Ford Taurus and 2001 Saturn SL-1 that I would like to be able to use the scanner on. Even the MT-2500 pdf manuals I found at Snap-on online do not go into any detail at all.

The North American OBD-II connector has 16 pins. Each pin connects to different modules and systems. About 6 or 7 are mandated to be standard for any vehicle sold in North America. The other pins are connected at the manufacturers discretion, or not at all.
The "personality keys" connect the various pins in the vehicle to the desired input wires to the scanner. Some personality keys have a variety of integrated circuit chips, resisters, diodes, etc. to accommodate the communication protocols of various manufacturers and the requirements of their various modules, such as ABS and Airbags and A/C systems.
As scan tools have become more capable, the sorting and directing and adjusting (speed or baud as an example) the signals coming from the vehicle electronically. The job of the personality keys is done within the newer scan tools.
Over here, most GM's need no personality keys, except perhaps for K-17 (for ABS I think), and K-20 for OBD-II communication in some cases. K-20 is pretty common for many Fords as well. Chrysler uses about 3 different keys, depending on year and system.
The Solus-Pro will "prompt" you to use particular keys depending on which vehicle and which system on that vehicle that you select, and you may have to change personality keys as you select different modules or systems.
                HTH.

Can I assume the K-20 key will do anything the older K-2A would have done? I just bought a K-20 assuming this, but if wrong I need to know why I might need a K-2A?

                  Thanks
