    verus waveform

    I am not sure how to set up the leads for a test I want to run. On a 1997 Olds Cutlass Supreme with a 3.1 engine, I want to plot the 7X signal (AC waveform) and a 3X signal (digital signal) on the same screen. For the 7X (AC) signal I am directed to connect the yellow lead to CKP(+) and the black lead to CKP(-). Where do I put the leads on the Verus? OK - Yellow to the yellow port and then black to the ground (black port)? That is what I would do if I was just plotting an AC waveform. But I want to put a DC digital waveform on the same screen. So......for the 3X signal (DC digital) can I just hook up a single lead to the green terminal? Do I need a ground? Can someone help me out here?

    Connect the yellow lead to the yellow wire of the 7x CKP. Put the black test lead on a good ground. The green lead connects to the ppl/wht 3x reference wire. Adding the 24x and CAM signals is just as easy.

    The SO scopes offer a lot of help on how to hook up to various components, one by one. However, on many occasions we are looking for relationships between signals, like in this case. I'm sure it would be helpful for a good deal of techs if SO would add tips in CTM on how to acquire these signals at once, maybe even with a known good example... This is not a complaint, just a suggestion

      I agree with Orevin, Back probe the yellow wire with the yellow lead, hook the back lead to a good ground and back probe the ppl/wht 3X wire with the green leen lead. The black lead acts as ground for all channels in the scope, the second black lead on the yellow wire and the black lead on the green wire are just shields. Then choose a sweep time that best suits te engine rpm you are testing at, also choose a voltage range where you can keep the two signals seperated onthe screen. Hope this helps

        Thanks guys - so you don't need to connect to the purple wire of the 7X signal? Connecting to the other side of the AC signal is not neccessary?

          I think the 7x is the crank sensor INPUT to the ignition module and the 3x signal is the OUTPUT from the module to the ECM/PCM.
          There's no reason you can't view both, one on CH-1 and the other on CH-2.

          You should be able to change the AC vs DC scales and also vary the voltage scale on each line, but I think you're stuck with the same time display, as it probably stays constant for all channels.

          You can record them all together and save a movie, then change the time base and record again.

          I don't know what's on your machine but i use the Shopstream Connect (SSC) program to play back on my laptops.

          The SSC program is always a "work in progress" and presently seems to have an issue with displaying voltage decimal places properly right now but I think SO is working on that.
          I also save a whole bunch of "screen shots" thet can save as either a .bmp file or a .jpg file, whichever you have your machine set to save. At least that's how my Vantage-Pro works.

            tech 12,no need to back probe the other ac (purple) wire, any good ground will do.
