Ethos will not scan Nissan NX coupe

I am trying to scan engine faults on a 1992 Nissan Nx coupe with ETHOS using 89L cable and Nissan adapter. I cannot get the Ethos to communicate with the vehicle. Do I need to use a personality key? Any help would be appreciated.
