Like in a laptop, tablet, or even a desktop computer, it's there to keep your basic settings along with the clock and date. You can tell when that battery has died because when you turn it on it will always revert back to a date around the time it was built.

autojoe.... did you replace the battery? if so , were you able to set the date correclty?
