    Secondary ign lesson

Got a Chevy kalos 1.2 8v here in the uk. Firing order is 1342

The vehicle has been to another garage and hey have replaced the headgasket after the radiator blew and it overheated the engine.

P0300 multiple cyl misfire stored current

I believe the ign system is a waste spark design with 2 coils mounted together and 2 towers on each coil. 4 HT leads then connect to the spark plugs...It looks like this.. 3wire connector

Appolgies for the lack of pictures but I'm on my iPad.

Not done a lot with secondary ign before so tonight I watched the vantage pro training videos etc.
I had 10 mins before I finished work earlier tonight and I'm not sure if I need to use the RPM pick up or not?

I went into power user tests- coil NEAR plug and followed the guide and connected up the secondary pickup that connects to the RF connector with the normal yellow and green lead.

I then looked at each cylinder individually at idle and did some throttle snaps. I have a issue with number one cylinder which I will do more investigation tomorrow. Again I will get some pictures to go with this...

I had to lower the kv scale on cylinder 1 and move the trigger down as the firing line was really low. The rest of the other cylinders looked good ( from what I've learnt so far... I think)

Suppose my first question is, do I need the rpm pickup?

No. Just use the single cylinder pickup. If you were using a conventional ignition you would use the single cyl lead on the coil wire, and the RPM/trigger on #1. I have seen the connectors come apart on that particular coil pack. It is actually a Daewoo engine.

Didnt Daewoo's use Isuzu engines? :-P

      Not that it changes much....

Yeah it's a daewoo engine, well actully I believe it's Suzuki based....

Cylinders 2-3 and 4 all looked like this

And this is cylinder 1, from what I've read and learnt it (mostly from paul danner via Youtube) it looked like it was shorted...

On removing the number one spark plug, this is what I found. Virtually no air gap.

Just out of interest I put this plug into no 4 cylinder and rechecked the waveform... The same. The spark plug was the problem.

Fitted a known good plug and it cured the misfire.

My first real secondary diagnosis using the VP!

Here is a decent article on secondary ignition analysis.
