    6.4 VGT actuator/ "Boost test" ?

Anyone able to control the vanes on a 6.4 Powerstroke? I had one yesterday that I needed to control the VGT actuator and it wouldn't let me do it. It would go into the test and I could click the Test button, but as soon as I tried to increase off of zero it would exit out and give an error message something like "Controller limit exceeded or not supported". That's probably not precise wording. I began wondering if it was the truck so I hooked to my personal truck, same thing. Both are 08's, one F250 and the other an F350

Verus Pro running 15.4 with the subsequent service update.

that test should work, I have used it several times. was there a code pertaining to the vgt actuator? if the actuator is not working or you have a biased wire the test will abort.

No, no codes on either truck. The original truck had slight loss of power and would set low boost code only during KOER test, but the test was moving the actuator. Hence the desire to control turbo to diagnose the system. The second truck, my personal, has no issues whatsoever, and passes KOER with no codes.

Any input would be greatly appreciated

      Edit:
Sorry, I went back and looked. Your avatar made me originally think you were with snapon, but now I suppose that could be a bad assumption. Regardless, thanks for your feedback

        vgt acuator

I may be crazy but a 6.4 has wastegate turbo no vgt dual turbo correct

According to the Chinese Bible AD it does not show a waste gate solenoid, just a low pressure and a high pressure Turd Blo Charger abortion with a VGC actuator. IMHO ,I feel Unless you are hauling 2 tons of Manure everyday , I don't see a diesel saving the occasional RV camper or boat hauler any money in the long haul, unless diesel fumes makes you Horney and you feel like Tim the Tool guy profiler Grunt, Grunt

Your posts crack me up witsend. And yes, as much money as I have made working on diesels, diesel smoke does make me horny. Haha

6.4's are compound turbo's with one being VGT. One of Ford's many designs in their endless quest to reduce turbo lag. You should look into the design on the 6.7's, they are pretty impressive.

I never could get the test to work, I tried it with a co-workers Verus Pro and his had the same results mine did. So that rules out my machine being faulty. 2 different trucks makes it seem unlikely that it was the truck causing the issue. However I admit, they were both early 08 models and there might be something similar in design on both that wasn't compatible with the test. Who knows.

I have since updated to 16.2 to fix my regen problem but haven't had an opportunity to hook back up to a 6.4 to try this actuator test yet.

Was the truck running when you tried the test?

Yes, and I hadn't thought about that. The reason I wanted to control the actuator was not for the actuator itself, but to build boost to check the integrity of the intercooler system. So basically a boost test, like what the 6.0's have. And that's how they control the test is moving the vanes. Hopefully they didn't change this to a KOEO test, that would defeat most of the benefits. I would have to hook back up to a truck to see if it specifies the truck to be running. I know it doesn't specify NOT running, or I would have seen it. Also, I'd have to look but I don't think there's any other boost test, this one is all there is. So that would be unfortunate

Either way, thanks for the input!

                  Boost test

looking at messages on tool states engine at operating temp, trans in park/neut, start engine and bring RPM to 1200. Maybe one of these conditions not being met?

I couldn't remember. But I know at the time I would have made the truck match all criteria that it gave me, on both trucks. And would have checked datastream to make sure applicable sensors were working to show proper readings.

So if its saying to hold rpm to a certain value, that means is is in fact a KOER test. I know that I had the truck running because the purpose for me trying to use it was to build boost pressure in the system. Some day when I get time I'll try again now that I've updated to 16.2 and see if anything has changed. The update did fix 6.7 Ford regen's.

I take it you ran the test on a truck? What were the results, did it allow you to operate the turbo actuator?
