    2000 Charactor Limit A Pain

I have been working with Snap-on for some time now through Ask-A-Tech and now SureTrack. It seems to just be a pain to work with. Spell check, Attachment limits and now as I found out today, there is a 2000 character limit.

This ended up taking twice as long to formulate a question and on top of that the information I wanted to show ended up taking 2 posts instead of one.

I was already to submit my post on this 2000 CLK, and actually hit "Submit"

At first it didn't like the fact that I left the engine size out. I did?

OK, well how do I do that now? I wasn't sure. If I click away from the authoring part of the post, will I lose my hard work?

Lucky for me, I figured it out. Whew. Now comes the spell check. Damn, what a pain! All the plural words, then all the acronyms I used, like ESM, PCM, EIS, CLK ETC... Lucky for the 'add to dictionary' feature. And yes, I did mispell a coupla words !

After that, then the 2000 character limit message:

What to leave out? Hmmm.. I tried not to be redundant, I didn't talk about the weather, it was all important info.

OK, I tried a couple of words at a time, didn't work. I certainly wasn't going to count each character, no way.

Finally I culled out a whole paragraph, that worked. Well, knowing it may or may not be useful information, I decided to add it to a reply to the post.

So, shouldn't there be some sort of character counter to let the author know when he is getting close?

Sorry you had trouble with your post and I do appreciate the feedback.

Anyone else run into problems with the character limit?

In our old system there was a counter but it wasn't accurate because it only counted the letters and not the formatting and then when you posted it would say you had too many even though the counter didn't indicate that.

I agree with everything Bob has said here in all three of his posts today.

As for the character number limitations, YES....IT HAS BEEN A PITA.

As you try to guide someone through a series of steps, what exactly do you leave out-?? Which IMPORTANT tid-bit of information do you leave out-?? One little detail can be monumental in its' effect if it's left out.

How many procedures in a service manual are limited to 2000 characters.
Don't forget, spaces and punctuations are considered "characters"....!!!???

At-a-boy Jay ! Thanks for chiming in. It does seem strange that there's a limit on characters, it can't be to save on server space since we are talking about 5 kb of data. It must be limited to keep posts from getting too wordy.

I sure hope that change will start coming quicker here. If Snap-on wants to go head to head wth Identifix and iATN, so they have a lot of improvement to make in SureTrack quickly.

Fixing that spellcheck issue doesn't seem to be making much progress. One might think that shouldn't be a big deal to fix, but it must be.

        Posting should be easy, right?

        Thanks, Bob

It takes time to change anything in the site. I cannot say when it will be fixed. I'm trying find ways to adjust the spell check without programming. All I can ask is for patience.

            POSTING SHOULD BE EASY, RIGHT?
Well it sure isn't "easy" when you have to SQUINT....

Okay, I'm flogging a DEAD HORSE here but this picture shows the difference between the font size of a previous post then the font size in the response box.

            Does this make it "easier"-???

The font size is HALF the size of what I was reading higher up the page.

Maybe eyes 40-years old and younger can see it easily but I'm a tad older than that.

When Bob puts in the year and make of a vehicle and it tells him he needs to add the year and model....it's EASY to confuse us "old guys"....LOL

              Re only allowing 2000 characters

If you're number 999 on The Quaker List and then they suddenly decide to allow 1001 more characters , I would say it's making some progress.
