I can say, and I may be in the minority, that I have never used Youtube instead of service information. Ive never even used it when service information wasnt available. Im just under 40, so Ive grown up with computers since my very youngest grade school days. Im part of the first generation that did so, so its not that Im old. My father in law loves youtube, hes sure he can fix anything with it....he's usually wrong and so are the videos hes watched. -

come on guys, everything you read /watch on the internet correct yea right, I like to google certian things and usally find what i'm looking for but have to filter out the bull posts first. The rest i go to shopkey and play there to find more teck. stuff. You tube is more for backyard wrenchers and more than not, are towed in to get fixed the right way. The thing that gets me is customers that watch all these TV shows that fix cars like "Two guys" that come in and argue that fact that their repair should only take 1/2 not 2hrs like it does on tv. Gotta love it.

Like discussion forums, there is a lot of false info on youtube, but I've learned a lot on there as well.
I repair GM instrument clusters now instead of buying new ones. Learned that on youtube.
Added a bunch of horsepower to my 12V Cummins. Learned it on turbodieselregister.com
Add lots of other stuff in there too. You do have to be careful though. I was reading a thread a while back on a Camaro forum. They guy said he defeated P0420 codes by removing the rear O2 and strapping it to the outside of the pipe. I wonder why he didn't post back when a different code appeared!

That's funny sh@t , I can see triing a thread on Bung spacer on an older car that would tend to move the rear O2 partially out of the exhaust stream somewhat to slow and dampen the rear O2 response time or try a gallon of lacquer thinner in a half tank to see if you can restore another 5% of efficiency to get one through testing like Scotty K claims , but rear O2 clamped on outside of the pipe is a Pipe Dream.Add lots of other stuff in there too. The you tube video's have saved my hide a few times. particularly while trying to reset a oil change light on Volvo and vw. They have been life savers!!! Once upon a time I used a "jakelish" video to figure out a timing chain on an old chevy z24.Comment

Dabbling with more and more Farfignuugen Stuff these days?
Ok DS 708 has a feature to lower air bags on a 2004 x5 but it didn't vent the rear airbags , so I unscrewed some air tube ferrules in rear spare tire area to vent the rear airbags instead of precarious placement of a jack.
Found another helpful video on You tube for a common problem I see with excessive negative camber on some BMW X5s eating up pricey tires and I never could figure out why.
Now I just need to find the video on how to change the rear ball joint assy without having to remove the axle nut and knuckle carrier to do so.Comment

5 dollar electric motor fix for Toyota Sienna power sliding door latch release
First dealer I called , parts guy is telling me it's part of a $600 plus assy, that's BS. I can't find what I'm looking for listed in AD or MOD estimator. I go to Toyota Nation Forum And find what I'm looking for.

or if $5 fix dont cut it BAM! , from one video got part # of motor assy Loc Release. Called dealer back with number I see on video and they do stock it separate from whole assy.
I also fixed expensive Lexus LX430 front door lock actuator assys by changing tiny $8 electric motors , albiet one side operates noisey.LOL Just pick me up the $230 actuator part #---------- and I'll put it in for if the ratchety buzz annoys you. I get a kick out of the customers that come to my shop saying things like "I saw it on Youtube" or " I read on the internet." I've looked at some of these video's and found them wanting in many areas. Bad advice, incorrect procedures, wrong diagnoses, and many other problems.
I prefer the service info and the experience I've acquired over the years to do the job properly.
Youtube is a money maker for me and all the shops in the area around me.Comment

Doesn't take a Rocket Scientist to tell which videos are done by hacks. A Pictures or illustration is worth a a thousand words of descriptive service text, and a video is worth a million words of service text. You tube videos will never replace proper diagnostic steps and proper service procedures, and access to service torque specs, sequences, and steps . but watching one while having a beer the day before I work on something de mystifies things . I like new challenging things, to a certain extent , but hidden aggravating torx fasteners turns to stress and aching knees , and trim piece tabs that bust if you aren't familiar with the vehicle, watching a video is easier for me to absorb and retain then triing to zoom into an illustration , that's a courtesy of a manufacturer in a service program.Youtube is a money maker for me and all the shops in the area around me.
