A Serial number search bar for Scanners with Liens or reported theft

    I think if I only had 3
$3K to spend and it was finally time to upgrade and I had to choose between the latest New Chinese scanner and a lightly used latest Snappy Scanner I see on Craigslist for the same kinda money .

I would hate to have the scanner taken away from me or have to assume the unpaid balance of previous buyer in order to keep the scanner at update time because the original buyer never paid off the remaining balance off with Snap On Credit. Wouldn't the Scanner be put on the Black list to be repossessed ASAP and treated as a stolen scanner? type in any serial number on this web site . If Snappy Credit shows serial number still has lien you get a yellow flashing dot and if stolen a red flashing dot urging you to alert authorities about stolen property.

My suggestion, buy from a reputable source, and stop worrying about stolen or unpaid goods.

I would agree, buddy of mine bought what he said was a slamming deal on a modis only to find out it was stolen. Have it checked out by your snap-on dealer first before droping cash on one. tread the waters lightly if "it's a great deal" Autel scanners are nice but more for the novice or beginers. look good in begining but the more u use them find problems JUst my one one cent.
I've tried and tried, but can't seem to fix stupid!

I would say between Autel and Snap On , the Snap On scanner with Troubleshooter and SureTrack is actually a superior choice for a Novice or Beginner to use, because he or she need more direction on how to proceed with a diagnosis with out someone to tutor them along. A Seasoned Diagnostic tech would not bother with the Troubleshooter as often, but it's still real nice to know it's there when he needs it. The Autel Das and Sys currently still have superior Bi directional capabilities than other aftermarket make of scanners costing 2 to 3 times as much so it's a good bang for the buck for a Seasoned tech without OE tooling to have One for doing OE scanner things like programming some immobilizer keys. The novice that needs the diagnostic direction of a Troubleshooter cannot afford not to have it to hold their hand along the way for guidance, LOL
I'm cheap and just need a cold beer for diagnostic direction, but I still might pick up another used Snappy one .

A recent thread by Monza Racer titled "warning stolen Solus Ultra Bloomington IN" has questions from you and responses from Joe Rappa.
Why are you asking again? Or are you asking a different question?

Yeah, it is sort off rehashing the topic, but if Snap On continues to make it difficult to check if a serial number has no payoff yet,or part of a stolen - repo list before you buy one at a good price from a private party, I feel it is akin to using unsuspecting buyers to do the recovery footwork for Snap On Credit. Hate to say it, but for the want of a serial # search bar checker on this site , it is probably riskier to buy privately a SO scanner and chance a repo on a Snap On Truck at update time than to mail order New Chinese Scanner and send $3K to Alley Bobber in Hong Dang Won Province Would also seem folk having that kernel of doubt or triing to find a Dealer willing to call in a serial number for a blacklisted used scanner is likely just going to result in more new Chinese scanners sold and or less privately purchased used Snap On Scanners being brought on the trucks for updating.

A bunch of years ago I wanted to buy a motorcycle from a guy that had no title. I asked the cops of they would run the VIN for me. They wouldn't, but said they'd send a patrolman out to check it himself. Know why? It wasn't a conspiracy. It is because the bike would have vanished and not been recovered for the rightful owner if it had come up as a stolen bike. If a patrolman is there, you can guarantee it will get returned to the rightful owner.
I think the rights of someone that had their scanner stolen takes precedence over the convenience of purchasing used equipment. Myself, I'd rather buy a scanner form a company that will help me recover it if t is ever stolen, and not from one that aids the sellers and purchasers of stolen property.

Well Joe, unlike motorcycles and automobiles, used Scanners unfortunately don't have titles that a prospective buyer of a privately sold unit can inquire about it before coming out to take a look. The only thing you can do is see old receipts, track down his tool dealer to run the serial number for pay off , If a serial number could be easily searched on this site beforehand and ID listed as stolen, a prospective buyer could alert the same patrolman that recovers stolen vehicles or Snap ON Credit to recover stolen scanners and other property within a couple hours , still in possession of the thieves, instead of taken from a buyer one, two or three years later that tries to update it with little recollection of who the seller was he bought the scanner from. Once word gets out about an easy serial number search bar on Snap On site the stolen scanners or scanners with unpaid Snap On Credit Liens ,be way harder to sell off and would be easier for thieves or sellers of stolen property to be caught with the stolen property still in their possession, not the sucker buyers, years later. The thieves would feel an urgency to grind off the serial numbers that would really tip off buyers to report the sellers to authorities.I Don't see how a serial number search feature wouldn't actually work to get more stolen scanners recovered for owners sooner within weeks from authorities arresting sellers rather than years later taken from the buyers at update time, People would be much less motivated to report someone selling one if it's on a Repo list though, LOL, But Just having the search bar available for folk to tip off authorities to a matching serial number of a stolen units would demonstrate the company still cares about folk that update privately purchased used ones. Sorry about digging up the dead horse again.

I can see where you are coming from, some years ago I bought through ebay a MODIS for £2K that never turned up, I contacted the seller and ebay and eventually got told to go to the police and the police told me to go to ebay and both of them fobbed me off.

I attended a police seminar some years back after this and the police advised us then that stolen goods that are exported they are not allowed to stop it even if they know its there, the powers that be want the tax.

Buy through snap on, recently I asked my dealer for a mot approved tyre tread depth gauge, he did not have one on the van, he looked into the catalogue and checked his computer and said its no longer available?

He made a phone call and I heard the lady on the phone say that the part number had changed, then she started to say something else and the dealer started talking over her and then told me the gauge is no longer available.

I have spent £ thousands with this dealer.

I was going to buy the Verus recently and a snap on rep advised me that the dealers have a loan Verus for us to try out for a week or two then we can decide if we should purchase or not, my dealer not interested and has very little knowledge of the subject if any.

Sorry for crashing your thread, but I don't think anyone is too bothered about the end users, just the sales figures.

I agree with you David, I'm too in the north west UK area and no one can answer my question about software availability. They want the easy sales. Even though the request in my post would make them more money. Just like your MOT approved tyre gauge. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PCL-VOSA-A...item2ecd5d5d61 HTH :-)

I really don't like to buy made in China , because If I always balanced decisions by the Bang for the Buck , it would be like having a fat chick on a teeter totter. Sooner or later you know you're gonna get stuck up in the air with your pants down.( and hopefully not getting Banged "by a Buck")

Thanks Dunkar for the link. That gauge however is no longer approved for MOT Use, we can only use the digital version, about £80 now

                            Yeah its a total loss

Off topic a bit this, but about 4 years ago I had two cars run into the rear of my car, all three insurance firms were told in writing and the police attended the accidents, I have just received an email from the solicitors that a cheque is just being issued to cover the claims. The world has moved on in the last four years

This is stupid comment. The problem is most things (especially USA products), are made in China. Some might be assembled in USA but components inside are Chinese. Its just the way of the world.
