Had that #3 Ford ZX2 piston and rod assembly for over a year , I pulled the head and put in another used piston and rod assembly with only a new set of rings and even reused the original bearing inserts, and it drove off into the sunset. There was a slight indentation for a half inch up on the bottom of the bore from the bent rod contacting, but it was really none the worse for it.
A couple days ago I had a friend with a new for him 2007 Saab 9-3 with the little fish on the trunk lid that he evidently Baptized his car in a body of standing water and had it towed to me . I showed him the bent rod of the Escort and him and his wife started praying . I took the plugs out and smacked the starter with a long Snap On 1/2 in to 3/8 extension and fried drive engaged momentarily to eject some water out of a couple cylinders, but starter would not engage again .
Before we went to Autozone for a new starter I turned the engine over by hand with a 21mm Special Forces socket in a Defunct Matco/ Armstrong flex handle wratchet and noted one flywheel tooth was missing but all pistons seem to push the long #10 Snap On Torx screwdriver to the same height at TDC , so my friend thanked The Lord out loud. I told him to not thank Him yet , because it wasn't running yet.
We buy the starter , put it on and pull the saturated air filter and crank it over with the plugs still out and accelerator peddle to the metal and more water flies out
I put the plugs in and crank it , it cranks fine then starts hydro locking again. I pull the plugs out again and crank it over and more water shoots out again . My friend starts praying again . It's like mid night now , 4 MGDs in me and I don't feel like taking the turbo plumbing or intake manifold off to get the rest of water out , so I go get the big 6.25 HP shop vac and take the tube off the throttle body and put the shop vacuum on the exhaust end of the shop vac with throttle body plate WOT and have him crank over engine with the plugs out and all the water puddled in the bottom of the intake shot out the spark plug holes. Next I put the exhaust side of the shop vac to the hose that attaches to the throttle body and pushed out at least a gallon of water out the side that connects to the air cleaner. I cleaned the MAF sensor , blew it off , attached the tubes , installed the plug s and the engine started , exhaust smoked awhile , but it all cleared and there was no engine knock, so never underestimate the power of prayer
