    PC Link No Connect

I cannot get the MODIS to link to my laptop. I called Tech Support and according to them I have everything set up correct. They had no ideas and just hung up when they had gone through thier "trouble shooting" procedure.

I have a wireless card in my laptop and have an ad hoc network set up.....

    Any ideas would be appreciated

    Hey there MasterWrench,

I have a couple questions that might help get you a more accurate answer over here...
    • Approximately how long ago did you purchase your MODIS?
    • What software bundle version are you running?
    • Did you download the PCLink update?
    • Are you getting any messages saying you aren't connected and if so try to describe (short description ) where in the setup process you were when the message displayed.

I bought my MODIS about 4 years ago

      6.4

I just got the PCLink yestersday from my dealer. I would hope it would be the latest update. My laptop is not connected to the net at work. Wonder why tech support did not ask if I had the "patch" downloaded

I go to "Utilities"..select "connect to pc" a window appears momentarily then a different window appears saying "Server is not responding or device is not connected to the Ethernet. Please try again later"...

I got a USB mouse and did s5truff in the MODIS itself and on my laptop both with "tech Support", everything is configured the way it is supposed to be according to tech support....

      Thanks!!

Hmmm... Maybe it's not needed for your application? I just clicked on the link and it does say "6.2" in the file name and you've got 6.4 so what do I know.

I was hoping it'd give me some indication of what we may need to do, but It's the standard message. So all though the setup there weren't any error messages then? If not it's it's probably just some configuration setting that you need to troubleshoot.

Unless you have complicated firewall settings and such you should be able to follow the direction step by step right through to success. Let me do some thinking.

I have windows firewall disabled and have a McAfee firewall but have all the files allowed that the PC link help says to grant access to.

Personally, I think it is something in my MODIS. I have my laptop connected to the network on my wireless card. It says it has good signal strength. I am going to get a USB Mouse and go into it and see what I can find.

Let me know if you come up with anything else...or any suggestions on what to look for....

          Thanks!

            No where to go.......

The first problem was getting the PC Link activation key. The number on my software disk is different than the one on the label of the package it came in. When the guy at tech support punched in the numbers, they came back as invalid so he had me remove and reinstall the software and then gave me "numbers to use" instead of the numbers I have. Hope that is not a problem in the future..

Tried calling tech support again today but there is no one there that knows anything about PCLink. My boss was upset with me for spending so much time at work on the phone with tech support that I will not be able to mess with this at work anymore. I guess I'll just return it and write it off. If Snap-On doesn't have the support for it and can't figure it out, I do not know what else to do.

Tried to do a "system restore" on my MODIS just for giggles to see if that would help but that is not working either....got an error message saying "contact your dealer"......

I am sure I have everything on my laptop correct. I have the ad hoc network, I am connected to it, I completely disabled my firewalls, have the tcp/ip settings correct, and still no connection.

Using the mouse on my MODIS, I go to the "start" menu and choose programs..then wireless lan configuration. It then prompts me to remove the wireless cf card and re-install it. A new window opens with all of the configuration settings, at the botttom of the window there is a signal strength and link quality bar. When I first insert the cf card the signal strength is about half to two thirds for about 30 seconds, then goes to none. Never get anything in the link quality bar because no connection is ever made....

Well, the system restore that did not work has now got my MODIS to where it will not communicate with the scanner, labscope, or multimeter. Guess I'll have to see if my dealer can reinstall the software so I at least have my MODIS working.....

So until then, I can't do anymore with the PC Link anyways......

You guys are calling the wrong tech support! Call the maker of your wireless router. They know what to do and will help you in short time. You don't have to or really want to disable your firewall. That's really a bad thing. I have the pc link working in my network with my antivirus and firewall on full blast. Good Luck, Transman

Basically, I have my MODIS with the cf wireless card and my laptop with an ad hoc wireless connection set-up on it to connect computer to computer..

I am not on a network of any kind. I have a laptop with wireless card built in. I am not connected to the internet on my laptop at work so if I turn my firewall off it is of no consequence. The company has an old computer hooked up to the internet for us to use at work so we can access "No Data" and "IATN" and this site etc...

Just trying to get a wireless connection from my MODIS to my laptop only.....no network, no other computers....no one else in the shop uses my MODIS nor has one....

Now, I get to see what hoops I have to jump through to get my software rebooted by Snap-On. The "System Restore" crashed the software or the Operating system and now my MODIS will not work properly...I am pretty much screwed I think.....

Ok, I have a better understanding now. Did you try, removing the battery and power from your modis and then try system restore? Using only ac power after a few minutes of no power. Your regular snapper dealer should be able to reflash you modis np. When you setup the modis with the network (even though there is only one computer) you have to use a keyboard and mouse combo to get to the right area to set up the network on the modis and if I recall correctly, the last step you have to exit and not hit the done button to make if run right. I can help more at the shop by running through the same settings with the modis on mine. I will try to remember to post during the week, we have been very busy lately. Transman

I hope my dealer will reflash my MODIS. I did not try no pwer thing. I had it plugged in to AC the whole time.

The tech support people had me in my MODIS checking the wireless lan setup with a mouse but they said it was all set up correctly.....

That would be great if you could post those settings and some mouse/keyboard steps to get it set-up and working...

                      Thanks!

Sounds to me like you have an IP address issue. I had a simaler problem and had to reconfigure my computers IP address. The Modis setup screens showed I had a good strong signal. Call back tech support and have them good through that with you. Not to difficult to do.

I did have tech support go through all of that with me. As far as they can tell my tcp/ip settings are correct. Even got a usb mouse and went into my MODIS with them to make sure settings were right there. I spent 3 hours with them on the phone and when there was nothing else they could think of the hung up.....

Right now my main concern is getting my MODIS back to working order because the system restore crashed and now my MODIS will not work at all.....

Unfortunately, I think there are more tech guys up there that don't know anything about the pclink than do. I have made dozens of calls up there and only found one guy who seemed to know anything about it. I even had one who told me the only thing pclink could do was access the internet, so you could go to the shopkey site. Yes, it can do that but it takes so long to maneuver without mouse that is is so much simpler to just get out of the car and go to my main computer. I do have a mem card that I can save the pictures to and place that into the computer for access but someday they are going to access the live data from the modis so we can send that to the computer and view it in real time and the card will be too slow for that. Had same problem with my MODIS, Wound up having to send it in and repaired at no charge. Main board problem.
