    I bricked my Modis.

Long story short, I was having some issues with the Modis, and decided to reload 9.2. I also cleared the registry when was mousing around in the Modis, figuring the CF card would reload it.

Now on power up the "MODIS" boot screen is displayed for about 5 seconds, then the screen goes blank, it reboots to the "MODIS" screen and repeats in an endless loop. Putting the CF in the top slot doesn't help. I took the battery out, opened the Modis and cleared the CMOS via the jumper on the board. No change. Is there a secret key press of buttons to force a boot from the CF?

I'd like to avoid sending it in if possible. It takes months to get it back from my Snappy dealer.

    Bricked Modis

Your dealer can try a card restore through Scanbay.

        Thanks guys.

Snappy wants $1500 for a new board. (why not an old board from all the Modis's that were upgraded?)

I requested my machine back to sit on and contemplate it's future.

Keep the ideas coming, as it just become a JTAG guinea pig.

Now Snappy wants $3,000 to fix it and update it, or they'll give me $3500 trade in value toward a Verdict.

          Sigh.

Still looking for a solution to unbricking this thing.

get another modis or the New wireless verus. I believe the verdict will be revised soon. 60 gb Is not enough... like the first gen verus that was 80gb... new one is 250gb

I'm loathe to go in debt to Snap-On again. With the market being the way it is, the parts chuckers are grossing far more than true diagnosticians, which I had prided myself in being, but it doesn't pay the bills. Customers would rather get their !! ** FREE ** !! scan at AutoZone, Advance, Pep Boyz, Firestone, Cottman's, AAA, Wal Mart, ect ect ect ect.

By the time the problem car gets to you (me) it's been so ravaged by the hacks there's no money or patience left for a true fix and the car gets traded by a slick talking salesman and the industry gets another black eye. But these are the times we live in.

So out comes the $37 Amazon bluetooth scanner and the $60 Launch cReader V (with lifetime free updates), both do CAN bus and have a remarkable data stream if you're handy with OBD protocol. The $6,000 MODIS is getting either eBayed or shelved, along with the surgeon's scalpel and mask. Out come the butcher's knives. It's just meat after all, isn't it? Why take your time? Next step If I feel the need to scope something, I'll get a real scope. More Scope for far less money.

"When in Rome", and "The Tree that Bends" and such. I'm wiggling off Snap-On's hook and I'm off to the slaughter house. Hopefully there will be a few wallets left to crack open.

              Just my .002 ppm

Sounds like you had an older modis unit. Good luck chucking it on flea bay.4000-3500 for a newer unit. With atleast 10.2 And an older on like yours that needs to have the upgrade preformed. 1000-1500.

As far as scan tools you have to have something cheap for cheap customers. You also have to have a way to deal with them. What we do at my shop is tell the customer $40 we tell them that we will spend up to one hour after that we will call them. What we do Is check the code or codes (like the free places) check the very basics that could be causing the problem. And then inform the customer of possible solutions to see if they want to proceed. If they let us do our thing and fix it we dont charge to diagnose. If they say well I don't know or they wanna think about it we charge them $40 and go from there. I don't know what it is about the number 40 but I guess it just low enough. I tried 79 all the way down to 49. And it was either no or maybe I will shop around first... when I started saying 40 usually 3 out 4 people go for It. And I usually also get the repair too! I have 4 other shops in my complex and we are a speciality shop. There is probably 20 shops in a 2 mile radius of us. We have to compete. Customers try and get us to price match a 15 dollar oil change. I'll do your oil and filter only for 20 but I have to explain to them we don't do the volume and we don't bank on selling cheap air filters or cheap spark plugs that you don't need. We also take pride in our work and won't strip your oil drain bolt. I have replaced at least 10 oil pans over the last 2 years from the jiffy lube type places that have screwed them up, After that they either leave if there that cheap or they opt for the full service oil change. I had 10 new cars come in from across the street when the new meineke opened up. For what you ask??? Oil leaks that started after oil change. We got payed to diagnose them and we know they are never going back there...

weed out the good customers from the bad ones, let the cheap ones go to the butchers and parts replacers.

Thanks! Times are tough... we used to be able to turn oil changes away and tell people to go fly a kite. Now we can't turn oil changes away because If they dont come in for at least an oil change then when a real problem arrives they won't remember us. Same with diagnostics... if they won't atleast spend half of the hourly rate to get some sort of an answer then they aren't willing to spend money to fix it there.
