OK, got lazy ... bought a 2500 and have no clue what the keys are for!!

Always did trouble shooting the old fashion way;

• Ohm meters
• Osciloscopes
• Volt meters
• Visual checks
• Cleaning contacts

Good ol' back yard mechanic style!! Well ... I'm gettin' too old to be crawlin' around like that ... so I bought me a MT2500 Scanner with a lot of cards, keys and connectors! Works great!!

But I have no clue what the personality keys are for or what they even do!

Can someone kinda quick school me on this?? I tried looking it up but .... seems like this is going to be obsolete soon and not much information out there on this (a little worried about that .. but it is doing what I want it to do) and I want to get the most out of my money .. I mean.. I only payed $275 for the everything and the box included!! (and it didn't even feel hot!! )

Any help or a shortcut to a link to where I can read what they are for and how to use them would be great!! I did find what keys can be used on what vehicles .. but what do they do??

Hi Darren, i own a s'pro, the keys, not worked with a MT2500, its replacement i should imagine is the solus and solus pro.
So when you get a car in with the eml (engine light- abs - airbag etc), you should be able to chose the manufacturer from the MT2500 screen, it may then tell you what connector to use and its location on the car and tell you the key number to fit in the key slot ? one of the adapters will have a slot which will alow the plastic key to placed in it.

Different keys for different models and systems.

Ok, I did the scroll down ....

On the little womans 2001 Chevy Blazer, I didn't notice a Key advisory ... but I really wasn't looking for one either.

I put in the vin info it requested, seemed to be going through everything ok. But the plug does have the slot for a key, so I was wondering if it did need one ... and I was really curious,... what does those keys even do??

You do not need a key for most GM vehicles.

gm here commonly use the K 27 or 44 key with relay built onto it.( to date )
the keys route the K or L diagnostic lines for comms to the various pins in the diag socket,some have built in resistors as some manufacturers need to see a voltage change at a particuler pin before it will initiate comms.
we used to have the old mt2500 and there was a grey obd lead which used a different key to the others..this one was twice the thickness and dark blue i think..never had to use it though
