      hello,

so my actually task is being able to Input VIN onto a new PCM/ECM or read VIN from a vehicle's ECM. is it possible to perform these tasks using ETHOS SCANNER v11.2? because sometimes ago i was using MODIS to work on a car, I wanted to write VIN onto the PCM but i was getting error, so someone told me I have to use CAN 1B adapter to be able to use MODIS to write VIN to new PCM. so my question is, I want to know if I do not need the CAN 1B adapter to be able to do anything with the ETHOS SCANNER.

A CAN adapter is not required with any Snap-on scan tool except the old MT2500. For a short while it was required with the Modis/Solus, but not anymore.

I don't believe you can program a VIN with an Ethos as it is limited to Codes and Data only. There are no Bi-Directional Controls on the Ethos.

Thank you very much for making me pay attention to the Bi-Directional Functionality, I never checked that all the while i have been comparing them all.

so i need to know from what software bundle that the use of CAN 1B adapter is no longer required? bcos i have MODIS with software bundle 8.2 and anytime i want to write VIN on CAN based vehicles i get CAN DCX error.

          pls advice more

            Ethos Bi-directional

I see you are in Nigeria. In some markets, Ethos does have bi-directional control as well as Euro.

The US version does not have either.

It went away somewhere around version 5.2. It was never used with the Ethos. If you are getting an error writing a VIN it is not because you need a CAN adapter. Something else is wrong.

                  well mate,
i am thinking with your statement that the problem is with the scanner, bcos i have experienced the fault with 3 different vehilces (dodge caliber 2007, chrysler 300C 2006, and grand cherokee 2007).

i will screenshot the specific error and will keep you posted.

                    Hello Joe,

may be you are trying to say version 7.2, bcos my MTG2500 is 6.4 and it still ask for CAN 1B Adapter whenever I am trying to do Bi-directional functions on CAN Based vehicles.

In fact I got the v7.2 clarification from Snap On Diagnostics Support Center, might I think you might want to re-confirm.

                      Hello ADS,

The MT2500 used it right through it's last update. See my second post in this thread. It went away for all other platforms. You are asking about a Modis and Ethos, which used the CAN adapter through version 5.2 or so. I'm pretty sure it was not in use after that, and I'm dead certain that you don't seen it today, or for programming VINs on Chryslers with the latest software. Unless you are using it with your MT2500, toss that thing in a river, bury it, sell it, have it bronzed...or whatever...but just forget about it already!!!

                        Hello Joe, and Mates,

Now I have a Solus Pro with software v10.2. I am working on a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7Flex Fuel. The PCM is bad, and I trying to replace the old PCM with a brand new PCM, whenever I tried to access the vehicle with the new PCM installed, I get the error below:
'System Version not found in the database.
                        Version Num: 857
                        For Codes only: Continue'

Could anyone pls tell me what's wrong.

On the alternative, I tried to access the vehicle with the old PCM, and on getting access, I replaced the old PCM with the new PCM, and then tried to READ VIN under the SYSTEM TEST menu, the scanner detected no VIN was programmed, and I was asked to input VIN, on entering the required VIN, after confirmation I get the error below:
                        'An error occured
                        1(0X1) #55 - (ManualMsg - DCX CAN READ'

Could anyone pls tell me also what's still wrong with my scanner or the vehicle?

I hope Solus Pro v10.2 supports bi-directional function?

All help or info will be appreciated.

The error "System Version Not Found" happens when the scanner doesn't have the correct software in it for that vehicle. It can happen for a couple of reasons.
                          1) You are trying to hook to a newer car than your scanner supports.

                          2) You are connecting to a car sold in a market that we don't support. This is probably the problem you are having. There are a lot of software versions for vehicles sold in Asia, Africa and South America that we don't support, because we can't get our hands on them.

                          3) When Chrysler vehicles return to the dealer for a reflash, a new System Version of their software gets loaded into the PCM. As they do that, those new versions must be loaded into the scanner software in order to communicate with them. It is one of the reasons you need to keep your software current. It's not just to get the new model years and features. It also includes all the new Chrysler System Versions. To clarify, my neighbor has a new Dodge Cummins. My scanner would communicate with it without any issues. He returned to the dealer to get the latest Regen Calibration, and my scanner would no longer communicate with it. When I loaded the next software release, it worked again.

You are probably working on a vehicle that we don't have software for. Making scanners work in Asia, Africa and South America will continue to be a challenge for technicians.

                            Hello Joe,

my software covers all domestic and asian cars till 2009, remember I said I have solus pro with software v10.2. I am working on a 2007 jeep grand cherokee of american origin VIN: 1J8HR48P27C700363. How come my scanner with version 10.2 will not be able to cover a 2007 model. I really don't understand. Pls look at it closely and tell me what might be wrong.
Or ?do I need to upgrade to the new software version 11.2?
                            Thanks

11.2 might help, but that car might have a version of software in it that Snap-on doesn't cover, for one of the reasons I listed above.
