Another shop brought an 03 Dodge Dakota here tonight to install a used PCM. The used PCM is already installed, here is the question; I don't have the old PCM, If I enter the VIN on the Tech Authority site in the proper blank, will it get me the correct soft ware for this VIN ? Normally I think you would rather enter the part number if reflashing a used PCM to a new calibration ? Or am I wrong about this ? Truth is I already did the down load and programmed the PCM. All appears to be well. Had to re-enter the tire size and axle pinion factors to get the ABS light out, as well as program the correct VIN. Is this normal ?or maybe this was a pre-existing condition from having the wrong PCM installed. Is there some where you can go to check to see if you got the correct part no. ( calibration) for the VIN ?

Hi Greasybob,
I enjoyed your videos on you tube
Is this Dakota
Black ignition key or gray?
Also What size motor?Rich Barton

Black key, no skim. 3.9 engine Thanks for the reply. I do have a problem, now have code P0753, 3/4 shift solenoid, my Shop Key wiring diagram doesn't show a 3/4 shift solenoid. OOPS Is that the Over drive solenoid ?Comment

No, you absolutely correct. If you search using the old part number, TA will give you exactly one file option to download, no guessing required. If you search by the VIN or TSB or YMM, YOU have to know which option is valid for your vehicle.Another shop brought an 03 Dodge Dakota here tonight to install a used PCM. Pinion factor and tire size calibration have to be performed after a PCM swap.
Yes, the 3/4 shift solenoid is the OD solenoid.Black key, no skim. 3.9 engine Thanks for the reply. I do have a problem, now have code P0753, 3/4 shift solenoid, my Shop Key wiring diagram doesn't show a 3/4 shift solenoid. OOPS Is that the Over drive solenoid ?
Do you know why the PCM was replaced?-Kai-

Thanks Kai, Not sure why the other shop wanted it replaced. I should have checked codes before flashing. I'll talk to them in the morning and do a little trouble shooting of my own to see if it's a wiring or solenoid problem. The down loaded part number is different than the one that was installed. The down load was about 300,000 bits and took about 10 minutes to program, must have had to cycle the key atleast 10 times by the time it was done.Comment

Maybe you can get the part number of the old PCM from as well.
Yeah, more key cycles than Ford. It gets better on later models. Did a 07 Charger and had to cycle the key only once. The down loaded part number is different than the one that was installed. BTW, with the purchase of your TechAuthority subscription you have access to Chrysler's service information as well (SI, TSB, wiring diagrams etc.). Make use of it if you can't find the data in your information system.

Hi Greasybob is the vin you entered in the chrysler web site, from the dakota vin not the used pcm?
If it is the vin from the truck then the flash you installed should be correct.
Unless there is a tsb's for this code there might be a flash to fix that code or this is why they thought the computer was the problem who knows what they was doing.
The dodges with a black key are no problem to load, but I will warn you if you put a skim computer in a non skim car you will now need skim to start so this can mess things up.
They are playing with fire unless you know what you are doing.
Some of the dodges I will unplug the bcm first before I plug in used pcm then I go threw the data to see what flash is in the module and if it has skim or not.Rich Barton

Rich, yes the VIN I entered was from the vehicle and not the one in the PCM. When you install a new software part no. into an old PCM are the software updates that have been released since the vehicle was manufactured auto matically included ? I don't have the vehicle here any more so I can't check for updates but this morning I ran the functional test for the 3/4 solenoid while backprobing the (brown) control wire and the voltage and amperage were switching, looked like a good wave form to me, the code never came back either, costumer is happy, we'll see I guess. When you over write the software like this do the stored codes get erased ? Can't find any TSBs for this. I understand the SKIM risks, changed a steering column one time on a Caravan, the used one I installed had a SKIM module and I plugged it in. Can't unlearn the PCM/BCM once this happens. ( that was years ago ). Same if you install a SKIM equipped PCM. Haven't tried the tool box disable yet.Comment

You got the most recent software for the vin # that you entered.
Yes, the stored codes are erased.
Keep the videos coming!
