    just learning

I'm a newb at this but I have a very limited intent in that I am not a full time mechanic nor want to be. I have a 1998 grand cherokee 4.0 auto trans 42re. In the process of pretty much fully restoring it. I just really like this jeep and being 55 years old want it around as long as possible.

I have spent a month or so studying the pcm, functions, programming, tools, ect. I have over the years aquired several used pcm,s that have the same part number as mine. Mine is running great at the moment but I want to have functional spares.

I want to be able to program my vin and mileage into the used pcms. If they happen to be the alarmed version thats OK cause I'm capable of adding any needed circuits. I think I understand that these pcm's allow the alarm to be enabled but not off. Also that I may need a 4 digit pin to go anywhere with it.

I have learned how to repair the pcm's to a certain extent, but know I have alot to learn. Looked at the drb3,cardaq plus, and another bench top programmer that has the pcm connection harnesses{which are expensive}. Could you guys tell me the best course to follow to achieve this end? Again I'm not trying to make this a money making affair or become a tech, just want the zj around for a long time. Thanks if you choose to help!

The least expensive thing to do would probably be take it to a Dealer, and have them program the PCMs for your truck. Then keep them as spares.

There is no cheap solution to reprograming I have been doing it for a couple of years now and have some equipment that will rewrite a Chrysler vin without paying for a Chrysler subscripion and it's fast and easy as far as reflashing a Chrysler PCM they can be rough and have alot of limitations that you can't see untill you are already looking over that cliff do yourself a $1500 favor and stay on the hands off side of this and hands on on other stuff.
