I recently installed a new Air Bag Module in an 02 Monte Carlo for the body shop. After installation and turning the ignition on I had code B1001. I've changed SDMs in several of this era GM cars in the past and can't ever remember getting this code from a NEW module. Trying the learn new SDM function in the Tech 2 was of no help either as I just got a BCM is secured message. I then checked to see if either the BCM or SDM was a programmable module and found an SDM ID function in the module menu of SPS. It worked, problem solved.

While there is a definition of this code in the SnapOn troubleshooter the proper setup procedure is not listed there. All that is mentioned is that the BCM or SDM was replaced without reprogramming the BCM with the new information. Maybe my memory is getting as bad as my eyesight but I thought that in the past these SDMs were just "plug and play". -

Yes I remember that too,it was plug and play just like Honda and Toyota...I did a 08 G6 and I was able to do the set up whit my Solus ultra it was nice, then had a Monte Carlo and had to sent it to dealer.. I have a 08 silverado and 08 Enclave waiting for the SDM see if I the solus will do it or will have to use PTPIILast edited by Pabliniboy; 10-27-2012, 12:21 AM.Comment

I've had a couple of issues lately with new GM SDMs. Both with newer Chevy trucks, one an 09 and the other a 10. The new SDMs were ordered from GM by VIN number, however when it came time to install neither the Set UP New SDM or Set SDM Primary Key In BCM functions would work. When I went to check for codes I discovered in both cases the the new SDMs were programmed for Suburbans as they had codes that only made sense for a Suburban, third row seating curtain bags I think it was. So I ended up having to flash them for the correct VIN and RPOs. After that the Set UP functions worked. Maybe the Suburban calibrations are the default settings?Comment
