    Volve Key Programming

Need a little help from a Volvo tech if there are any out there. A 2007 Volvo S60 2.5T just rolled off of the towtruck into my bay about 15 minutes ago. It came to me from a couple of towns away. A woman from out of state was visiting family when the ign lock cylinder went bad. The nearest Volvo dealer was closing up shop for the long holiday weekend, and told this woman it would be okay to use a junkyard part and key to replace hers, which is what the shop who had it first did. Needless, to say it is a no start/no crank, and I have the luck of dealing with it. I have used the VIDA program to reflash and initialize modules on Volvo cars in the past, is it used to program keys as well? Is it possible to program a key that has already been programmed to work with another car? I read on Identifix that if a new lock cylinder and key are ordered from the dealer, they come pre-programmed and no additional programming is necessary. Would I be better off just telling her that we should go that route? Just trying to gain a little info before I plop down the credit card for another VIDA subscription if I'm gonna wind up ordering one from the dealer that's pre-programmed anyways. I know that some keys can be programmed over and over, and some can only be programmed once. Anybody know which category a volvo key falls in?

not sure myself, but this is a direct quote from shopkey: "when a key has been programmed for the central electronic module, the key is locked and cannot be programmed for another vehicle."

Thanks CrackerClicker. I had our SA call the lady this morning and tell her that we thought a new lock cyl from the dealer was a better option. It comes coded to work with the original key, so no programming is required. This also means that she won't have to have one key for the ignition and another for the doors. I just feel like it's the better option all the way around. Hopefully she will be okay with this option because I have found conflicting information regarding whether or not a key can be programmed twice. The only way to find out for sure is to plop down the 100 bucks for the VIDA subscription, plus 65 for the software pack (im sure) and try it and see. I'd rather not have 165 bucks of the shops money up in the air on a gamble if I can help it haha.

The owner of this vehicle decided to get a new lock cylinder from VOLVO that is coded to use the orginal key, no programming neccessary. This will also prevent her from having to carry 2 keys, one for the ignition and one for the door. I never bought the VIDA subscription and attempted to program the junkyard key, so I still dont know if a VOLVO key can be re-programmed after it has been programmed for another car. Since it's the CEM that is actually programmed to recognize the key, not the key being programmed to recognize the module, I would think it would be possible, but I didnt't try.
