when is the best time to update software?

newbie here. I'm currently a student at community college in Automotive. I just got an used Modis with 8.2. I don't really use it much but it's just too good of a deal to pass on. btw, it's all legit verified by SO credit and the truck dealer who sold it originally. the unit has been registered under my name.

does Snap On Industrial sell the software update under the SEP(student discoutn) program?

does Snap On run specials from time to time on this kinda items?

and one more question, what is a DSS-Scanbay in the second half of this article:

and one more question, what is a DSS-Scanbay in the second half of this article: Scanbay is what they use update your software for your scan tools. updating any tool must be done through a SO Rep using scanbay only. not ebay or ect..

Hi there, and wecome as a new tech, Students do recive discounts as you stated, I had also gone through the GM ASEP progam back in 1998. I gotten a gift certificate and used it up with my snapon truck rep after I had gotten hired at the GM Dealer. but let me tell you that you don't get much of a discount through snapon. they do want want your business and look at you as fresh meat so they make you belive you get a good discount, well anyways that what they did to me. Good choice in getting the Modis, It is a good platform and even though you say you dont use it much you will start using it more once you start working in the real world as a drivability tech, hopefully thats what you plan on doing and not just a wrench monkey like many new auto collage students think. Drivability is hard but its where the real money will be. good luck and welcome to the world of automotive.

For small shops on a budget like me, i like to update once a year. Usually, around a month or so before the next release SO will allow you to purchase update without paying a penalty and you will get the next release (in a month or so) for free. May not be policy but i'm sure glad they let me do it. Dont think i could afford to do it every year if i couldnt.
