Is personality key necessary for MT2500?

I've searched all over the internet trying to learn about personality keys but have not been able to find any explanation of their need/use on the MT2500.

Would someone give me a short tutorial on them? As an example is a key needed with a primary cartridge 1996 to 2001, GM etc # MT25001001 and a Fast Track cartridge Troubleshooter through 2001 # MT25002901 and an MT2500 scanner?

I just need it for older behicles such as 1999 K1500 and C1500 Suburbans.

For any OBD2 application, a personality key is needed. Ford, most asian and generic OBD2 will use the K2A key, GM of that era will use the K9 key, Mopar will use the K13A key
