I had a similar problem with a 2002 Nissan Pathfinder a couple of years ago.hello everyone, just got a solus ultra and i was using it on a 1997 nissan frontier and it wont communicate. scanner asking for the nissan adaptor or the obd2 adaptor and i was hooked up at obd2. the data cable light is on... do i need a nissan adaptor on this early nissan. thanks...
My new Solus-PRO would NOT communicate with the Nissan.
Once the area "technical sales specialist" plugged in his Modis, something changed and the Solus-Pro would communicate just fine.
Somehow the vehicle was told by the Modis to communicate in a manner which the Solus-xxx machine could recognize but it didn't start the process.
I never got an answer from SO as to what or why the Solus machine wouldn't communicate initially.
Appears that something isn't quite right in how your version of the Solus (Ultra) initializes the communication protocol.
Perhaps someone from SO Nissan group could illuminate some information/fix for this issue??? -
This is because Nissan OBD2 port from 1996-2000 is only for generic OBD2 code reading. You should be able to connect to it using global obd2 feature of Solus Ultra.hello everyone, just got a solus ultra and i was using it on a 1997 nissan frontier and it wont communicate. scanner asking for the nissan adaptor or the obd2 adaptor and i was hooked up at obd2. the data cable light is on... do i need a nissan adaptor on this early nissan. thanks...
To get full diagnostics out of 96-00 nissans you must use nissan2 connectorComment

Thank you for your post, First, I could not find a 1997 Nissan Forntier in any of my scanners or my info system. From what I saw they began in 1998. With that being said as Joachim stated early OBDII Nissans need to use the Niss-2 adaptor to get all the full features and systems, the OBDII DLC is just for Global OBDII information. This is by the manufacturer not Snap-on. The screen you should have gotten should have looked like this----
82206001.BMP
My software is different from yours so if possible could you please post a screen shot of the scrren that showed to use the OBDII adaptor and let us know what version software you are using.
THANKS!

I checked the ULTRA at the shop today.
The 1997 model year doesn't show a "Frontier"
The listing for Frontier shows for 1998, 1999 & 2000 (& up).
The 1998, 1999 & 2000 all showed the same message as Steve displayed.
These vehicles have TWO Data Link Connectors. The 14 pin connector inside where the fuses are is for the factory "Consult" scan tool.
The OBD-II connector under the dash is just that, the OBD-II.
NOTICE, for the 2000 model year they had a changup in the data link connector capability mid-way through the model year (somewhere near the 3xx,xxx VIN sequence.
Confusion could have been avoided if the scan tool had stated that the 1998, 1999 & early production 2000 model years needed to be connected to the first design Data Link Connector inside the fuse box cover, rather than the OBD-II connector under the left side of the dash.
Informing the tech that the vehicle has TWO DLC's and the 16-pin OBD-II connector will only function when the scanner is in the OBD-II mode would have made Spoon96 (and others) aware that these vehicles need to be connected in another manner than what would initially be expected for a post-1996 vehicle. When you find an underdash DLC, it's reasonable to expect communication of some kind, without looking for the second DLC
The Ultra I have didn't come with any other data link connectors either so I would have plugged the OBD-II connector into it too.
(still doesn't explain why the Modis had to wake up the 2002 Nissan I had before the S-pro would communicate though ?????)Comment
