So I know the verus pro will sipport windows 7, but with 8 being released now, and also optimized for touchscreens, will this tool run windows 8? Its also super cheap right now to buy. I havent bought a verus pro yet but seriously thinking about it with a good deal goin on right now. I just want to kow what all I can do with this machine and if it will make me happy. I liek to streammusic sometimes while at work and also check up on facebook, news websites and such during downtime, is all this ok to do on this tool? Otheriwise I might just go buy a new touuchscreen laptop/tablet and go with something like AE and a picoscope added on at a later date. Any insight is appreciated!!!!

Trust me Ive been beating my head against the wall trying to make up my mind on which route to go, with the current promotion though its almost going to cost the same amout either way, and I do like snap on diagnostics, its what I am most familiar with and they have come a long way from a few years ago. I consistantly get a lot of negative reviews on AE and other pc based tools.
And to the previous post about turning it into a wheel chock, I get what your saying, however please know that I am not talking about downloading music files or going to porn sites or anything otherwise unsafe type thing. I'm talking running pandora or iheart radio in the background, and checking some email or facebook during a break, in addition to using mitchell, IATN, manufacturer websites and such. I am more worried about the multitasking capability of the tool more than anything. If I have to worry about having problems hurting the tool by visiting safe well known websites then this thing is a piece of junk, becaus the whole point of it being a pc based tool is to be able to multitask and have an all in one solution right?Otherwise you would just buy a solus and a vantage.
And no one answeredf my question about windows 8 yet. I love the new interfaced and its optimised for touchscreen tablets so it woudl make sense to me if your going to upgrade the windows, why do 7 if 8 is out now, granted the harware supports it?Comment

What I was trying to say is it is dangerous to assume there is any safe place on the internet. Hackers seek high traffic sights just like Facebook and others. I've heard of people having trouble with malware
after visiting Facebook. Bottom line is you are vulnerable to trouble
no matter what computer you choose - the question is do you want to risk a $400 machine or a $10 k machine?
Also some programs don't play nice with each other. Every time you install a new program on any computer you run the risk of it introducing
harmful interaction with existing software. No doubt something like this is what is giving Snap On's software writers premature gray hair.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure the Verus Pro we just got at the shop is still running Windows XP. I was shocked that it was still running on the same operating system the original Verus we traded in had. Don't get me wrong it is a much nicer tool though.Comment

IMHO I would only use the tool for diagnostic work. Anything you add or do via the internet has the potenial to conflict with the machine.
A laptop or notebook would be a most logical purchase considering the price of a verus.Comment

XP is a great software platform as it is pretty much bullet proof. If you were to upgrade to windows 8 it would probably void warranty. Also the processor and ram probably aren't going to be able to run Win 8 and other programs at the same time. XP is very lightComment

XP vs Win 8 on Verus ?
Not only that, Window 8 seems to make navigation twice as hard for me. I got my new office PC and didn't have a choice. It is painful. Although I know a lot has to do with learning the OS, I simply don't find it intutive to use. The transistion from XP to Win 7 was much easier for me.
It is not so much for work, more for entertainment I think. It seems better adapted to small screen mobile devices. It was designed for touch screen, no doubt, so maybe thats why it's so difficult on my office PC, no touuch screen. It still would not be good for Verus even though verus is touch screen.
Verus is not for any other OS than Windows XP Embedded. Hell, XP prodoesn't work as good as Embedded according to most who have tried it.
Is there a Win 8 Embedded ?

Good advise. If you get a virus on a laptop, you can wipe the drive and start over. Absolute worst case: another $300 for another laptop that's easier to use for music, etc.. Virus on a Verus pro? I understand you're in for a "level 1" service in San Jose. About $900?
My knowledge is limited compared to a lot of guys here, so take it for what it's worth. Imho, these are specialized tools, put out by a very small company (Snapon Diag.). They are bound to be more finicky, more prone to failure than an off-the-shelf machine.

I've had a Verdict for a few months now.
I used to use a laptop at work for both cars and internet use.
Since I got the Verdict I eliminated the laptop, bought the docking station and hooked up an external monitor to the scanner.
I use the Verdict for both scanning cars, and writing this post right now.
I have a wireless mouse and a bluetooth keyboard and it's doing all I want out of it.
Out of the box it wasn't the fastest thing, but I also upgraded to an SSD hard drive and another gig of memory so now I'm pretty happy with it.
As far as upgrading the OS, you're better just keeping it with XP because it's factory locked so no updates can be installed and it's at a point where there are no or very little bugs rather than a newer operating system that everyones trying to hack and get into.Comment

I have to use a laptop and my verus pro. The verus is too slow for work orders and other computer work I need to do. I wanted the verus so I could do it all from one machine, something that would make sense to me. But snapon in their wisdom decided that a bottom of the line tablet was good enough to base their top tool on.
When I first got the Verus Pro I installed windows 7 and dual booted. I was unable to run the diagnostic suite, neither could I find drivers for the ezscope or the touch screen. Then snapon released an update for the tool. The update checked the MBR and found that an expected file was missing. It then removed the entire diagnostic suite and voila a red wheel choc. Since windows 7 wrote over the MBR there was no longer an option to push the up arrow to run system restore and I was told that the unit had to be sent to California.
Now that I have a good backup image of the hard drive, I can experiment again because restoration will be a lot easier. I have the original drive, a back up image on external drive and the SSD I'm currently running. In my opinion windows 7 would be good and Linux would be better. support for XP is coming to an end and machines running it are only going to become more vulnerable to malware.
As far as windows 8 goes, I can't see why anyone would like it. But to each their own.Comment

I've bought the Verus Pro just 7 months ago and didn't swap the HDD or tried to run other diagnostic programs from it than VCDS and yes it's much slower than running the VCDS on my $300 netbook running basic win7.
I've got the feeling that this could be my last SO diagnostic equipment, I should've buy MaxiSys instead. What a waste of money!

Verus forgiving virus
I own the verus pro. I have owned the solus ultra, the vantage pro, the Modis and before that, the solus pro. I am highly considering going back to the ultra or the edge. I have never cursed a tool more than I have this double and then some overpriced verus pro. The "ONE and ONLY" thing that snap on did protect us on was its virus protection. By that I don't mean a virus program, that is another story within itself. If anything happens to the operating system, all you have to do is restart the machine, hit a button, and reload the whole operating system. However, you will lose everything you had stored. Every program in which you had added will have to be reloaded. I do think this split setup was clever.
As far as using it for a laptop, you will be disapointed. I think this thing has the least amount of processor and ram you could get by with and still be able to call it a tablet. In my opinion, they do not want you using it for anything other than limping through shopkey or suretrak. The XP operating system is not even Pro. I really believe for 10K +, that there should have been some power and navigation speed here or at least a platform that is still supported by microsoft.
I have had more communication problems with the verus pro than all of the other snap on scanners I've owned combined. I want snap on to just sell us the software suite to put on our laptops or tablets. Bring the suite up to the times and get out of the "one all in one" tablet business because its performance just plain sucks for multipurpose use!!! I hope this comment and venting reaches Snap on and the look hard at my (sell us the suite) suggestion. I do hear there are some things coming down the line for the performance and platform that is involved with the verus pro but just like always, I'll bet you might as well bend over to move to it. I can only hope I am wrong on that....Comment

I was beginning to think I was alone in this logic. I have mentioned this before. The test run I had with the Verus confirmed my hardened belief that a scan tool really has no business being a pc. That is how I ended up with the Modis Ultra for good. All I wanted was a solid, kick-*** scan tool like my old Modis....but better. The Ultra should have been the flagship instead of the Verus. All it needed was another 2 channels, some real printing support (IR and wi-fi), and more pids etc.
There are many of us out here who don't necessarily believe more is better. At the rate computers evolve, there is little hope an "all in one" will remain useful (assuming it ever was) for long. I much prefer to leave the net to my laptop which is WAY faster and safely at my workstation with my chair. When I fired up the "Pro" and saw XP, it was all downhill from there. Too big, too heavy, too slow, too cluncky, too much, too expensive.....too bad. My Modis Ultra... almost a "10" in my book, but lost some features of the old in order to "save something" for the mighty Verus Pro and justify its existence.Comment
