    MT2500 v2.2 vs. MTG2500

A few months ago I purchase a used MT2500 v2.2 from my local Snap-On dealer. Works great except the LCD screen occasionally fades out requiring me to unplug it, and restart it.

Snap-On dealer gave me a couple of MTG2500's to play with, but both of them had hosed backlights.

He then gave me 3 other MT2500's to try, but the original is still the best.

The MTG2500's intrigue me (not for the graphing), but for the 12V power suppply port. One appears to work (LEDS light, it beeps, etc, but the screen is VERY dark and unreadable without backlight). Is there an inverter or something on the main board that hoses the backlight that I can purchase and install/solder-in?

Is there any downside to an MTG2500 vs. an MT2500?

I purchased a Solus a few days ago with version 9.2, so the brick will now become a backup.

    Thanks

    MTG vs. MT-2500

At this point, I would not worry about MTG2500 as it was just an interim tool till Snap-on came out with the Solus. I have a MTG and although I like the Yellow on black text, the graphing is not near as good as Solus and my MTG tends to lock up a lot.

Stick with the combo you have and I would never get rid of the MT2500, because it is an excellent back-up tool. I have 3 and I although I never use them, to me they are worth way more than thier stated value as a used scanner.

You have Legacy mode in your MT-2500, which is great on older vehicles. It seems that Snap-on decided to dump a lot of bi directional tests to make room for newer cars & their technology. They left those tests in Legacy Mode.

I recently had a 1996 Nissan come through, that the Solus Pro could not run a vent valve test on. My MT-2500 could. Since Solus Pro does not support Legacy mode it was good to have a back-up.

I do have 2 Modis and Verus, but they were being used, so the MT-2500 was a good choice for bi-direction control on the Nissan.

So keep it around for back up. Good choice!

Hi Bob, and anyone else checking this thread,

I promise that Snap-on didn't drop any functional tests on purpose when moving from the Mt2500 to the new gen scan tools. If you know of a sepecific case, please post it in the "What do i want added to my Scan Tool Forum. It should be an easy fix.
Ideally, please include the 1st 10 digits of the VIN and the exact thing missing from the new tool.

      Thx!!

Have you looked on ebay? There are hundreds on there all the time, working or for parts. HTH.

I agree with the above comment about ebay.

I purchased my used MT2500 from my local Snap-On dealer. (I used to be a mechanic, but I've been out of the business for 20+ years). However, I still deal with a local Snap-On dealer.

I started this thread in 2010. As a update to my original post........

The Solus I mentioned in the beginning turned out to be a piece of **** from some ebay seller. Ebay forced him to take it back and pay for return shipping..... and ebay refunded my ($1,000). (I did not follow the seller to see if ebay dumped them as seller)

About a month later I purchased a Solus Pro (almost new) on ebay for ($1,600), and haven't looked back. My MT2500 sits waiting for use incase I need it some day.

If you need an MT2500 or an MTG2500 check ebay. Look at the seller's feedback, and assuming you purchase within ebay's guidelines you should be covered if the item is not as described ("for parts", "working", "like new", etc).

I know some people love ebay; others hate ebay. After 10 years and only a few problems with sellers I'm in the love ebay group.

MTG2500 has more powerful processor, and boots and works faster. I keep it for my OBD1 coverage.

hey, fun fact here, Interstate batteries is providing a replacement battery power pac for the mtg2500

Also, I still have both mt and mtg2500- just for graphing mode alone, the mtg is the winner. Granted, its, not a true scope. It does give a close enough read to see if closer examination is required.
