I was sitting watching tv the other evening and after a lil bit o the earthly plant stuff I was wondering close to the same thing, a commercial for one of the cars with it came on and I was wondering if you do run into someone, is it your fault or the car makers fault? After all the car is supposed to stop it self.

After giving it some thought myself I would assume a big orange pylon should be sufficient, but now that you mention liability, at which speed is a tech liable up to?

With this recent patent if you do hit someone they'll just stick to the hood, hopefully you don't also rear end someone in the process.

It's scary enough thinking about a Hood Rat stepping out in front of my vehicle on the South side with a gun drawn and having my car's automatic braking overriding my accelerator foot, then having the Hood Rat stick on to my hood after I gently tapped him, so he can take aim again and put a round into me through the windshield!

I wonder if any of these situations come up in the designing of these systems? The hood rat with a gun is a real thing that may happen.

Maybe having a a conveniently located switch on the dash that you can turn Accident Avoidance system off and after 5 minutes of driving give a nag light and chime like driving without your lap belt on. By turning off the switch your front and rear view cameras would probably be recording , as well as the inside camera to see who's behind the wheel for review for law enforcement and insurance companies. I think you can already clear the codes and video footage of the Hooker in your front seat with a Port Freight 08.

The thing is that everyone thinks that they're a great driver, certainly better than a computer. I work with a body shop and salvage yard. what I see on a daily basis doesn't back that opinion up. people are terrible drivers, constantly distracted and little knowledge of the laws of physics (you really know what I mean if you ride a motorcycle or bicycle on the road). Ever see a flock of birds fly into each other ? Or a school of fish swim into each other (bait ball) ? Nope, ultimately the insurance companies have the numbers and they'll crunch them and the incentives will be put in place to bring about the most cost effective changes.

Big government regulations for dash cam surveillance of every aspect of your driving like in east block countries will be coming here soon and your misfortune will be sold for a few bucks by buffoons that work for the insurance companies for a few bucks for other people to laugh at.

Bob, if you're expounding the idea of autonomous vehicles, ..... they can't even get a hundred traffic lights, nor even three in a row co-ordinated, let alone a million vehicles.
As for GPS, just last week, a person from the younger generation had such faith in the directions that she drove the car into a lake about 30 metres following the GPS navigation instructions-!!!
Sure, the military can get a missile within 10 feet, but that's close enough. Impacts with vehicles can be a matter of millimetres.
Getting distances "close" only counts in Horse Shoes and hand grenades.

I think any trucking company that would chose to convert to autonomous vehicles putting drivers out of work would have to build them as vandal proof as possible, protect the tires, fuel cells, sensors ,etc. Can't see the Teamsters and even taxi drivers putting up with their jobs going to automation without a tooth and nail fight. More and more of these F.O.R.D.s (found on road deactivated)or in 5mph emergency limp home mode would be causing huge traffic jams and pissing off the general public more than ever! People would likely be torching them where they sit.

I think you got it all wrong. New technology always brings with it new jobs and new skills. Invention and innovation have driven the economy for the last 500 years or so and given us a lot of cool things and a better quality of life along the way. I don't think any one wants to go back to picking cotton seeds out by hand or dying from a simple infections.

New Tech jobs be created for 10 high tech positions for Camel Jockeys relocated to Guatemala while firing 50 truck drivers that once may have been auto mechanics. Now if I could just sit back in my cab, look down at cleavage in convertibles and just ride along as a baby sitter to the on- board navigation auto pilot system when I'm fatigued and need a rest and be a joystick spotter for the electronic rear trailer axle steering for backing in my automated truck to the dock in tight quarters for a 2 cent a mile pay cut if the truck would drive itself while I get rest or eat, I wouldn't have a problem seeing things that way.

So far Tesla has been a small market, but when you start talking about producing 500,000 car a year and you get pre-orders for 300,000 of a car you don't even make yet you've become a major player. Is repair information going to made available ? So far Tesla owns all it's own stores but will the repair information be made available to the public ? Will the right to repair laws apply to them ? There won't be any emissions stuff if they're all electric but other things break. Will Snap On provide scanner coverage ? With no emissions is there still an OBD communications port ? Sooner or later these things will be showing up as used vehicles and at auctions and one will make it over here up north.

I have a customer who owns one here in Alaska. When battery operated cars make it to Alaska you know its for real. Unlike you Greasy I have no desire to mess with one, but driving it would be fun. I wonder how well it operates at -65F?

I just verified that the 2016 Tesla does in fact have an OBD II connector however it is a dummy plug in order to satisfy federal laws. In Alaska, Tesla sends a tech up a couple times a year to address minor stuff but if any major repairs are needed we need to ship the car to Seattle for work.

This ones for you witsend.. An 06 Monte Carlo SS 5.3. I had to replace the power steering pressure line so I had to remove the belt. It calls for a special tool since the tensioner is recessed. Any other attempts will just get you a bloodied arm. The solution, just un bolt the tensioner spring and relax the pulley. When time to re-install just cage the spring with a hose clamp. Put some grease on the hose clamp so it can slide around the ends of the spring. This is actually an improved method as the belt is now easier to install with both hand free.

Very Cool, Some times the only special tool you need is your Noggin to Rube Goldburg something together on the cheap with what you already have on hand.
I need to Google who this Rube Goldburg guy before my time actually was and what his claim to fame was or at least inspired some good Jewish jokes?
