No problem Jay, I understand.
Last time I checked we had no one in the area to Demo the scan tools and most dealers, at least in my area won't drop the coin on one for a demo unit.
IMO the Dealers are not as knowledgeable as they probably should be when it comes to diagnostic tools. It seems they let the customers pick the scan tool they want based more so on there budget and less on their actual needs.
I recall back before I Started doing mechanical repairs they used to set up training classes for diagnostic equipment. I remember one of my old dealers went back to work for corporate and used to do the training when they would sell a new piece of equipment.Comment

You've hit on a problem I find common around here. A majority, some of them even good nuts and bolts mechanics have no idea what kind of diagnostic power even a basic scanner has - let alone a Verus with a scope. No problem Jay, I understand.

No idea what the pids are actually telling them let alone the best strategy of using them along with what driving conditions to use to find a given problem.
And certainly they are clueless how much a good scope could help them.
Fast track Data scan under the troubleshooter has been a real blessing for me
in defining and making sense of unfamiliar pids - how much more so will it help
the average or below average joe mechanic. This is one of the most helpful areas of troubleshooter and needs to be as complete as possible including as many pids as possible for every controller featured including a definition of the pid, why it is there, expected ranges under common conditions, and possibly even advice on what pids to view them with.
I do believe if more mechanics knew what they were missing out on, they would be better convinced of the need for these tools and want to buy whichever tool fit their needs. I know Snap On has tech reps to help with education of customers, but they are spread pretty thin. Some of my past tool truck guys recruited me to go to other shops who had either bought or were considering diagnostic equipment in the past to give them a little insight as to how the equipment could help them and making it worth my while by reducing my bill a bit. This strategy of recruiting a working mechanic in the area knowledgeable in the tools AND diagnostic procedures might help fill the gaps and help all concerned. You can expect the reputation of your business to be no better than the cheapest item or service you are willing to sell. - WheelComment

Well said. I have gone to big Citys and the Snap-on guys are really good. Then lots of time the small places not so much. For me every time I see the snap-on guy he should be looking at how he can make your life easyer, find a better tool for the job? Know your tools and scanners. When I got my verus pro I was talking to a snap-on rep from a bigger City I don't think I could live with out a scope any more. You've hit on a problem I find common around here. I've used a scope for over 20 years, and there are lots of guys better with one than I am, but find I don't need to pull it out very often anymore.
I wouldn't be without one but I like to have one tool do one thing, and that one thing I expect it to do very well, and completely.
I like the reliability of separate pieces of equipment myself.Comment

I too have had to help my rep with customers in the area.
One customer in particular bought a Verus but did not know how to use. I think he bought it under the assumption that it was the highest price tool so it should be the best tool instead of basing his decision on his actual needs. Dealer Did not push it on him either. He had a hard enough time with the scan tool portion and figuring out it's capabilities there. I doubt he even knew what the scope was or how to use it.
Long story short. I had a similar issue after my software update at the time. So I connect His scanner to the hot spot on my phone, download a System update for that version of software and install the latest firmware for the wireless device that was required after the update and Boom! Happy customer.
It went from;
You Sold me a piece of junk. I'm gonna sue you! To... Thank you, here is $60 for my truck bill, I will See you next week. (Scan tool was already Paid in full)
Now, My dealer is not familiar with this scan tool and the quirks as, 1. he doesn't sell alot of them and 2. He is in the sales side of the business not the actual repair side of the business. I can't really fault him for that as that is how he makes his living. Can he afford to Drop 10G's out of his own pocket on the latest tool and spend a few hours each day learning it to it's fullest? No, This is where the need for Diagnostic Reps comes in, Especially in Large Cities. Especially since they Don't have guys like us out in the field to assist them. With the exception Of Joe Rapa on here who does travel
So on my 1 hour lunch break, I was able to defuse a situation where the dealer was looking at having the unit sent in for repair and the un happy customer being without his scan tool for at least week.
It's difficult for the Phone support team to try and help these guys when they can barely find the on switch and turn the tool on let alone find the version of software. It might be nice if they had a Basic Sheet Sheet if you will for the dealers to go over.
As far As the tool itself, I find myself More dependent on the pid's and the data and less on the scope these days. We all know certain cars can fool you. So it's good to have the scope to rely on as a backup to confirm what you're seeing. It's also good to have known good data to compare it to.
Any Way, Now back to this thread. I would like to see what the new tool as well as it's software has to provide over Previous versions.
I Like my Verus Wireless but It would be nice to have something lighter with a removable scope module. I also See the Benefit of having an on board camera as I usually have to set the tool down and get my cell phone out. I wasn't sold on the Verus pro But, If we true have speed up the boot time significantly and improved the Overall functionality I would definitely consider something new.Comment

As the availability and the reliability of that data has been made available to us And we learn to interpret it properly, we can better understand the Failure that occurred to set off the light.Comment

I just traded our verus pro off yesterday 09/21/2015 for the Edge. it really is much faster than my old pro, it was taking 3+ minutes to boot with 15.2 and this one takes under a minute from a cold start. it's a plus over the other, i really like the fact the buttons are all gone, in the upper right side, it seemed as every time i would pick it up, the pro, with my right hand, my thumb would hit the picture button and it would take a picture. the edge is much light easier to grab and go. however, it does seem to be hard to read words for me anyways, they seem a little smaller than the pro. all in all, i think for me, it was well worth the trade up.Comment

For Windows 7 , I would think the Verus Pro would have above the minimum1Ghz processor, 1GB of ram and minimum of 16GB of Hard drive space required to install windows 7, but the earlier Generations of Verus I thought had something low like 256- 512 mb of ram and a single core Celeron in them that would probably smoke the fan trying to load more modern Windows bloatware than the designers ever intended to run on it.LOL. Aside from the diagnostic software and lab scope that can only be married to the tablet, if they were actually regular windows tablets or laptops, they probably would get a very low Windows experience rating.Does anyone think SO will let us update any of our older Verus"s to Windows 7 now that they use it on the Edge? I just bought a Verus Pro in April, and now wish I had waited.

Glad the new Edge is fast and up with the times.I'm envious of it's exclusivity, but would think now adays with the wide spread availability ,affordability, of touch screen tablet and $600 55" Big screen TV technology now a days, If Snappy based the newer platforms loosely off popular consumer tablets, instead of Odd Man Outs, their actual cost for the Hardware to run their software on might be able to be kept well under a $1000. So for regular updating, it could be arranged like a telephone contract, if you signed on to 2 years of uninterrupted updates for a older platform an upgrade to the latest new platform theoretically could actually be kept free with a 3 year update agreement or shouldn't cost any more than just buying a Port Cargo $999 Earl Chive EL 708 Speciali, to get one with a 4 channel scope LOL. Whether the case is embossed with Snap On or not All the scanner internals come out of the same God forsaken places the rest of your kid's video games and Chinese scanners are made out of, not hand crafted parts made in Silicone Valley anymore , like possibly some internals of the original MT2500 may have been at inception, but the days of paying $3000 for your typical PC are long behind us, except for those folk that can afford to line up for latest joint Apple and Harley Davidson offering called The Road Apple and pay 3x's $3000 , LOLI just traded our verus pro off yesterday 09/21/2015 for the Edge. it really is much faster than my old pro, it was taking 3+ minutes to boot with 15.2 and this one takes under a minute from a cold start. it's a plus over the other, i really like the fact the buttons are all gone, in the upper right side, it seemed as every time i would pick it up, the pro, with my right hand, my thumb would hit the picture button and it would take a picture. the edge is much light easier to grab and go. however, it does seem to be hard to read words for me anyways, they seem a little smaller than the pro. all in all, i think for me, it was well worth the trade up.

JAY,I know marketing isn't your territory but I have to ask. How come the New brochure doesn't list the Windows 7 embedded feature or the USB2.0 and 3.0 capability?Guys,
Here is some information on the new Verus Edge.

• Upgraded Solid State Hard Drive “SSD”
• 1 USB 3.0 port and 1 USB 2.0 port
• Speed Improvements, Upgraded 1.83GHz quad-core processor.
• Sleep Mode enabled, this will allow the unit to start up from where it last left off within 5 seconds. From completely off to on and sitting in the Diagnostic Suite it will boot in a minute.
• Enabled Ready Mode
• ProDemand/ShopKey Pro Mobile
• Multi-functional S button
• Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) Anti-Virus
• TSB/Recalls/Campaigns (Verus Edge only)
• Simplified Printer Installations
• Windows 7 embedded standard
• It’s lighter than the D10 • Supports Multi-touch for pinch zoom
New Docking Station will only support the VERUS Edge
• The Docking station will support VGA and HDMI connections
• 4 USB ports
• Light weight
• The docking station is required to plug in an external monitor
I will try to add some pics later.
part number on the back is #EAZ0077L43A
Also can you ask the marketing guys why they had to make everything so Dark. The background being black takes away from being able to see some of the tool's profile in alot of the images. Not to mention the one that is supposed to be displayed on the side of the truck Looks like a black blob going down the street.
It leaves me asking, What are they trying to hide...
Sorry Jay, Some one had to point it out
As hefaus says Keep Smiling
Still Love ya though buddy...

OK a baby stepping Snap On tool using diag tech,
So little history, learned diagnostics on Monroe 2000/ Tech1a.
Eventually bought Mac Enhanced Monitor( OTC4000e) as mom bought 85 Ltd ( little one fox based chassis) 3.8 tbi.
Had issues with Mac Advantage, etc.
Eventually bought mt2400 used, added upgraded card/accessories and moved to scoping fuel pumps and injectors and egr valves etc.
I have so much fun SHOWING customers bad parts, blows them away most times.
Well finances, switching jobs all kept me from buying new stuff. 06 Firestone sent me to driveability training. AWESOME class, helped me even more.
Fall 06 bought Solus, updated it I think, had memory issues so dealer took main body and then quit, so made area guy deal, bring me souls pro and take old units case( boo boo forgot to keep obd1 connectors) but shop had. MODIS so all good.
DREAMED about MODIS since saw demo in 02/03.
Well add 10.2/10.4 update to Pro an was in heaven, and when got to working for Pep Boys added Vantage Pro 09 model 8.4 I think.( out for new mobo from being dropped by co worker).
So summer '13 got Su?us Ultra 13.2 sorry guys brag all you want about Solus Pro but its a chunk compare too Ultra.
Well Jan 14 Ultra stolen, no option hit eBay, with shop owners help found Verdict D7 13.4.
Figured on missing loyalty charge before 15.4 dropped.
Now we are talking, its used, battery dead, forgo its a tablet and burnt out Vantage Pro wall wort trying to run it.
Found it my Toshiba laptop psu's work and have three! So no dragging psu home. Well owner makes me leave at work till paid for but manage to get memory upgraded. Did software update it said it needed( not sure may have been bios) as it had me connect scan !odule to unit.
FLAWLESS except for once it , I think got a small bug but just not restore, lost music I had on it but oh well( customer gave me jump drive with lots of music he had recorded/played) .
Any who got to current shop, they have S pro 14.2, God what is deal?. Well deal with me driving 84 mi was he decides on new scanner to Bloomington shop then can bring to Plainfield, has been almost 2 months pretty pissed on not having my nice wireless Verdict.
Reason I can't bring with he keeps thinking he will buy d7 off mecfor what I paid for it,and still paying for. Only owe $500 well $475 after this week. So far no side work to help speed process.
So new SO dealer has dirty truck, meh attitude about moving my truck account, sees me drooling over V edge but didn't seem interested in helping, working with me or anything.
Boot times much better on Solus Ultra over pro and less clunky in software like in scrolling through lists etc. If HAD too pro would be last resort. Been there updated with no issues to Ultra.
My Verdict was/ is awesome, after mem update, figure few other likes after its home and running ssd, needs bigger battery but have an antigravity power pack so, saving for cradle instead. Also working to get a tool box top of built, as I traded for 19 in flat screen. Have designed 4 ft hutch with storage , hoping to build soon( will be out of 1 in square tube, tig welded, sheet metal covered.
Do I dream of getting SO Credit paid off and trading for bigger/ better Verus edge, yup. Heck still drool over sia2000 for vantage pro, saw one in use, almost as much fun as using hei on V pro. I do not miss big box analyzers like Allen smart scope( which I loved by they way) but now we have majority of it in our hands!
Oh well so far my peek at Verus edge, me like. Might try to get test demo but doubt dealer will even let happen.
Oh well tech rolls on, I actually have little to no issues with Verdict except smaller screen and needs updated, and still need to replace obd1 adapters.
Oh and have little charging issue with M3 module.
BUT considering I got d7 for $1850 shipped, $0 in memory upgrade out of older laptop I got for free. I am happy.
Will I buy newer stuff, probably but I am tool junky. And I can overlook small features lost for other upgrades. Oh and we had originally Verus at Pep Tucky and it was pretty awesome. But due to other shops fools(tools) couldn't keep the license daily updated( so it couldn't be stolen) or lft off charger and batt was low/ dead so used my S Ultra more.
BUT scope was awesome with MY ign adapters from Vatage Pro.
Expensive, sure, and also remember we are adapting a desktop product to handheld service so some issues will come out, but seems SO has listened for most part.
Now gotta go water money tree, need more tools, been dreaming over on pico web site also. Tried their scanner, meh, but like some of labscopes abilities on top of my SO products.
Just my history and thoughts and opinion.
But its like I tell my performance customers, run what ya brung, hope ya brung enough/ how fast you wanna go?
If you have to go fast on cheap you better be smart, which I have had to do for last 30+ yrs.
And will for next 30 yrs.
Good luckComment
