    Need a Lifeline.

Times have been tough lately, so we have been bringing in vehicles that we do not normally mess with. I flogged my way through a Mercedes S500, now on an '89 BMW 635 CSI. Long time customer just bought it for his son. Very clean car, but was brought in for fluid leak. Turns out, Hydro Boost unit leaks. Took 2 weeks to get replacement.

Runs extremely bad on cold start, exhaust smells flooded. No C.E.L. and I have no way to communicate with it. (Both my Snap-On scanners, and my Launch scanner only go back to '92.

While replacing the Hydro Boost unit today, I noticed a vacuum line stuffed in some sort of bracket near the pedals, also there is a 3 pin plug hanging out in the same area. My 1st thought was that it might be for a MAP sensor. I tried looking in Mitchell, but can not find a 3 pin plug matching the wires.

This vehicle has a 3.5 engine, all I have seen in Mitchell for said vehicle is 3.4. No MAP, or BARO.

Anybody have a clue what is supposed to go here?

Maybe it has something to do with the speed control?, vacuum parking brake release? Range selector controlled vacuum dump switch ? Check the wire colors.

I think Bob is correct, but knowing some BMW owners , It might have once been used for a Peter Piper or vacuum source to evacuate contraband. Happy New Years Everyone , Stay out of trouble

So it sounds like you are getting a valve job done on the ticker Jake? You might be better off doing it yourself! Doctors like to make people guinea pigs to test procedures and new drugs. Keep the stress level down and you will be OK even after the valve grind! Nice to hear from you, Miles.

wish it was just a valve job on an old car. Hope you mend well and quickly and don't require any pvc components.

Thanks all for the replies. figured out what was supposed to be on the interior firewall. The vacuum line is for the in-car temp sensor, the plug is for the missing chime module.

Happy New Year to you all. Hope it is a great one for us all.

                        '69 c-10 question

Since you are looking, I will ask another question.

I just made a set of fuel lines for the T.B.I. for the '69 C10. This trucks' factory fuel line runs off of the right side. Am toying with the idea of replacing stock in cab tank with '69 F body under frame aft of axle. (Still right side.) Fuel pump is most likely going to be a frame mounted unit. Going to make a bracket off of the left Trans mounting ear to support lines right above and about bell housing mating area.

The hard lines are long enough to clear everything including the Trans dipstick tube, going to use Dorman plastic kit for flex lines to the hard lines that will be on the frame.

Here is my question: Do you think the long lines (with only one support point) may vibrate enough to create a problem with the O-ring connections at throttle body?

I have thought about making them shorter and using more plastic hose, but my room for access between engine and firewall is getting a bit busy.

What's with the rusty brake hold down spring laying on the top of the cylinder head? Looks sorta crudded up too.Are you at least gonna pull the plugs and do a cylinder leakage check and pull the oil pan and check the lower end ?

                            2 different set ups.

When this project started, wrecking yard offered Engine, Trans, P.C.M., harness, etc... Out of an '89 C2500. (Supposedly out of a running truck that was a drug running seizure). Turns out, the engine had been a hodgepodged mess. Block is a 2 bolt '60's era. Had correct heads, and intake for the T.B.I. set up. When I opened it up, was a sludged up mess. I had a spare engine for my '90 K2500 in the back of my shop. My spare got overhauled and installed. I used the other block (empty) as a mock up. After the Exhaust manifold issue, I got rid of the Aluminum Dart heads, and used the nasty originals.

0 run time on the engine and trans in the truck, Using the "waste of money" engine with an empty TH400 case as mock up externally as I can.

I have multiple intake manifolds, throttle bodies, cable brackets etc. Have been saving for a while.

I personally like T.B.I. set ups because there is almost no maintenance, no plastic gaskets, no poppets, and I get 26 M.P.G. on my personal truck.

TBI is the way to go.

One bracket at the bell housing as you're suggesting, and maybe another support bracket/stand-off using the left coil bracket bolt just behind the TBI.

If those are rubber hoses as chafe protectors on the fuel lines down the bell housing, up here they would hold moisture in between the rubber & the steel lines rotting them out very quickly.

X, what kind of tubing bender is that on the floor ? Can it bend 3/8 steel line without kinking ?

                                Subject..... 03 VW Passat 1.8.

                                Symptoms....Intermittent inoperative fuel gage.

Diagnosis......Back probed the fuel level sender at the fuel tank and found voltage leaking from the fuel pump supply onto the sending wires. The Instrument cluster sends voltage signal through the sending unit in pulses and measures the amount of voltage drop (pull down) to calculate resistance and thus the fuel level. The base voltage between pulses should be zero. I found the base to be around a volt and a half with the engine running. With the key on and engine off I found the voltage to be zero. I found the source of the stray voltage to be from the fuel pump supply voltage leaking at the fuel pump cover where the leads pass though. See graphs below.

Remedy.... I first tried to just replace the harness connector but still had voltage on the fuel level sensor wire. Replaced the fuel pump with one that included a new cover, the sending unit is separate. This cured the problem.

Synopsis...... Some how when the plastic fuel pump cover ages it can become an electrical conductor
