I knew there was something about that picture I didn't like and it finally hit me. That's a caliper bolt put in with an impact and probably never checked with a little elbow grease to make sure it's tight??? a little sloppy

A 16mm socket was used where a 15mm socket should have been used and it, got wedged and stuck on the bolt.

got to love mazda. 13 3 w/ 2.0 drove over parking block, said he didn't see it. Hit broke t-cover at motor mount, wich took axle out also and said eng shut down. Replaced cover and went to set timing up to put ballancer back on eng. locked up turning w/ rachet.??? turned other way and locked up.???? pulled plugs and found 2 valves sitting on top of piston. pulled head found 2 exhaust valves broken w/ one putting a hole in piston took head out also. Stupid design not having anything keyed to crank. Can't explain how that happened since I/we never cranked eng. over due to dead batt. when towed in.P>O>S
I've tried and tried, but can't seem to fix stupid!

Even if he didn't try to restart (which is unlikely ) the damage was already done. That's why the engine shut down. It was already broken.
Such a wonderfull idea.... interference engines. Never liked them since the 80's-!!

                    Just bad luck or preventable?

Could- a , should- a, would- a tried to turn that engine over by hand before putting the new timing cover, front axle, and motor mount on it , but you didn't. Looks like a straight forward job we all ***-U-ME that it's going to end well doing what we assume is going to fix things to make us money . I've been in company of Cross land with a run of bad luck too, but it's still not as bad as being 6 foot under in the cemetery looking at a land of crosses. I'm praying I don't ever need to change my cam synchronizer on my 95 Exploder.

This engine set-up uses a diamond coated washer to lock the harmonic balancer to the crank, instead of traditional woodruff key. Timing is set by locking the cam and the crank with special tool set. If something struck the crank pulley hard enough, it could cause the engine to loose time by slipping. HTH

My bad for that but It never crossed my mind and I didn't know it was set up like this. Never even seen this setup before. In my mind, STUPID!! Well at least I cought it before the axle was in. Was setting the timing up for the ballancer. What a great design.

It's an Asian vehicle. I would have EXPECTED it to be an interference engine. That's just experience since the 70's and 80's.
In fact more and more engines went to interference designs to improve volumetric efficiency.
Now they do the SAME THING with variable cam timing.....and some still are interference engines to boot.
Hmmm. rubber belts that slip, jump, sheer teeth.....Wile Coyote-!!
Now they're going back to chains....and variable cam timing....OK.....
Now the Stooopid part is extended oil drains.....

Got customers with F150 Eco Boost's ? Keep an eye out for oil leaking from the timing cover just to the right of the AC compressor. You will also see the oil running down the right side oil pan top edge. Take it to Ford, they should fix it for free.

Sad day.... I was told by my Snap On dealer that replacement bits for my Blue Point YA2800 impact driver are no longer available. This was my favorite tool for rusted screw removal,... brake rotor retainers etc. Snappy makes a replacement tool but it's not the same, it's not as convenient. You need to grab a wrench and sockets. Anyone have a lead on where to get 5/16th drive flat, Phillips and Torx bits.

maybe try liberating some 1/2" drive Port Freight socket star bits from their socket holders might be an economical way to get some sizes of the torx bits WEAR EYE AND FACE SHIELD using that honkin overkill air hammer, LMFAO What's wrong with using the hand impact driver?
