    EGR meltdown

    Greasy, I did one of those leSabre intakes and left out the metal tube that came with the dorman intake. I didn't realize the tube was meant to shield the plastic passage from excessive heat. I also think it had a weak/leaking EGR valve allowing more than the usual amount of exhaust to flow through the passage and overheat it. Regardless I got to do it over again for free after about 50 miles on the replacement manifold. The instructions were terrible and I stared at that metal tube for quite a while wondering where the heck it went. I ended up figuring it went in the garbage but I was wrong.

      I seem to remember the GM TSB discussed shielding the plastic from the heat with the metal inserts that came with the GM updated plastic upper plenum that I did back in the 90's, long before Dorman even made any. (did a couple more since that but not many) They also recommended replacing the lower aluminium manifold too but we sealed the pitting with a very light, light, skim of silicone and that engine went another decade and a few hundred thousand kilometres, and more without needing anything else in that area.
      TSB's are our friend.

        For any interested, had a 12" water main break in front of my shop last night. I received a call about 6:30 a.m. my time from a friend that works at a shop across the street. Drove as close as I could, walked the rest of the way.

        Walked passed the local 10 news van in the process. Turns out, the videographer was someone I knew from the last 15 years of our old race track that closed after 2004. He recorded a ton of video of the mess. I also became the news interview whore.

        I was on local channels 5, 6, 7, 8, 10... Still waiting to see what KUSI channel 51 shows.

        As far as I cared, put my name and shop name on T.V. for free.

        The only internet link I have is channel 7. So here I am.....

          road closed in November?

          Sounds like November your whole street will be closed down for awhile. Maybe your customers will have to bring their cars to your house if they can get through to your shop.

              Crusty, Thank you for the reminder to look at TSB's every time I run into a problem with an aftermarket Chinese part installation directions.

                Haha. The GM change up ones had metal inserts built into the plastic. The TSB indicated the heat was what burned the original ones through and that was what was changed.
                You might have recognized the metal tubes should be inserted even if the aftermarket parts instructions didn't specify it.
                You might not have had a problem with the aftermarket Chinese part even if deciphering the "chinglish' was possible.
                It wasn't a "stab", just a reminder that there is sometimes good information in TSB's.

                  The 1st. time I ran into that upper plenum issue was not a paying job. Was my mothers Buick. I was lucky enough that my dad ignored it until it hit the point that the air filter was wet, snorkel, etc. I back tracked the stain to the point of removing the Foil insert at throttle body and saw the leak under pressure. Also learned something else with that job. That Honeycomb piece has to be there or it will not run right......

                  Go figure, (With the '69 C-10.) Finally worked the Engine compartment enough to spray, buy something I do not have any experience with. Apparently this paint does not work with the touch up gun that I have used painting my old stock car when I either walled it, or got brushed by someone else.

                  Quick run and but a HVLP gun. Now I am trying to learn something else new.

                  What a waste of $90.00 per quart paint. Looks good from afar, but far from good.

                      Here is a hint.

                      If you are like me (not experienced) in the paint and prep part of jobs like this truck. when you mask and wrap said vehicle in plastic, do something about the seam between the fender and door. When shooting the sides of firewall, the over spray and air will come out of that seam.

                      Imagine my surprise when I took it all off and saw this dusty mess on both sides. Clay would not touch it, luckily a good carnauba wax, soft pad and a high speed drill got it.

                      By the way, am I posting too much of my personal stuff?

                        I don't think so. It's nice to see someone doing things as right as they can. From what I can see there is a "Pride of Workmanship" which many would do well to emulate on so many levels, not just refurbishing an old project.

                          I don't think that any 2 independent shops operate the same. It's nice to see what others do and how they do it. I've been fixing some lightning strike vehicles lately. It's not getting any easier, used modules aren't as much of an option any more.
                          VW in a lot of hot water lately. they don't even have a fix in mind yet for the smoggers. What if they have to buy them all back. The Gov't fines are one thing, what about class action law suits ?

                            Clean Diesels , and Diesel Plug in Hybrids are common in Europe and a lot of people here would want to see them available here too.I don't trust Big government and Big Oil aren't putting the screw to VW.I think if one gets 30% more fuel economy then a Gas engine of the same size it should be given special consideration and have the screws loosened on the emission standard if it's better fuel economy can make up. That pisses me off, I think I'm going to start Rolling Coal in front of Dodge Rams in traffic with a modified VW Rabbit to vent my political displeasure with the system.

                              I agree that TSB's are packed with good information and I don't read them often enough. I learn most things the hard way. But it is one way of doing it....its just harder. haha

                                Now THAT sounds like German Engineering philosophy....LMAO

                                Why do things simply when over engineered and convoluted works just as well......(another LMAO)


                                And if THAT doesn't work, we'll just LIE about it and puke lots of NOx gasses and make every city in North America disappear with the smog from 1960's-!!
                                Ya, I remember those days.
