    TIP of the week

    Subject....2005 Ford F250 6.0

    Symptoms....Crank, no start,

Diagnosis ...... Tries to start, get smoke from the tail pipe. All the usual start data looks good, (see Below) Got sync, 48 volts at the FICM and good oil pressure, I even had a fuel pressure gage hooked up to the supply line, 60 PSI. I back probed number 5 injector to verify the FICM voltage, nothing there, hmmmm ? Checked the number 7 injector, good voltage there and the injector is grounding when cranking, Number 5 cylinder is intermittent at best but mostly no voltage.

Remedy... Replaced FICM, vehicle now starts and runs smoothly.

Synopsis ......... That 48 volts showing on the scanner PID is no guarantee that it's actually supplying that voltage to the injector. I'm not sure how many of the injectors were actually firing, When the key was cycled the injector buzzing sounded normal to me. I think that there is warrant to have a back probe or signature wave form test for the injectors instead of the "replace with known good part" technique. I hate parts "swapping" Just about everything can be measured with electricity, you just need the correct sensor, actuator or measuring device.

From looking at this it seems as though the PID for FICM volts is taken from a point in the FICM before the failure point of the circuit. Most of the time voltage PIDS are reliable in my experience. This is a good lesson to keep in mind.

Told the guy what it was, His answer, well they looked kinda low to me so I just added until they looked good. 3rd guy w/ oil leak, Under car soaked w/ oil cleaned, checked oil, found 4qts. over? told customer about it. Answer, Well I knew I had a leak so I figured I put in extra. 5 mile road test, found no leak

before they raised the speed limits and put in a 4 lane hi-way I never had much concerns about these type of problems. The vehicle is a 2013 Toyota Tundra, the concern is a misfire that starts at about 80 MPH. Maybe slightly before. No misfire on acceleration. I had my pressure gage taped to the windshield, never lost fuel pressure and I think the data here backs that up. It feels like an ignition misfire. Vehicle has 26,000 miles on the clock. It also does not misfire when just revving the engine. Here are some scanner movies to examine if you wish. Two with just misfire data and one with complete data, all separate drives. No codes. the misfire seems random across a few cylinders.

Bob, I can't view the pictures for one reason or another. If the truck is still under 3-36 Factory bumper to bumper warranty coverage,I would send him on his Merry way over there with those pics in hand before he's SOL.I think the older Toyota Diagnostic System is kind of a Panasonic Tough-book Snap On Verus with Grab Rails Hybrid kind of thing so their results should look sorta similar. Probably be a coil boot or plug

Have you checked to see if the miss is when the EGR is commanded on? Could be restricted passages.

26K is kind of low mileage to have enough carbon built up but seen it on higher mileage Fords.

I couldn't see Bobs pictures (don't have SSC presently)
Maybe it just happening when the torque converter clutch is applied and TCC begins to chatter after it reaches it's load threshold.

Here's the address where you can download ShopStream Connect for free.

You don't have to have a Snap-on scan tool to use it to view those files GB posted.

Sure is a lot of questions for a free download, why do I need to give scanners Serial number if I don't own one or can't install the software in it? Snap-on should already have the other info on me like name and address?

So if you accidentally bought a used Snap On scanner off of E-bay or Craigslist and it's on Snappy's Top Secret Stolen and Repo list they'll post an APB and you'll see 3 Snap On Trucks with flashing lights pull up and offer you a great deal on a brand new Verus Edge with the hot scanner trade in credit , or your gonna go to jail .

I don't know what kinda encrypted Atlas files those SSC pid files are Bob.My Windows 10 wanted to search the shopping bag store for a App to open them ,LOL.
I shut down Windows10 and booted the turd up in Ubuntu and tried to view them there with VLC media player and I get pages and pages a bunch of sample lines of computer jibberish. like code leading to a mainframe control center launch of a space shuttle
Bob,Guess I'll wait to till I buy a Vantage Ultra before I decide to download SSC.

                                Guys, take a closer look.
See the small red asterisks at the left.
Only seven of the 14 fields need to be filled out.

Basically it's just name, address, zip/postal code, and email address.
The rest just leave blank. It'll download just fine and it is a FANTASTIC program for viewing screen shots and movies from SnapOn equipment-!!

                                Git-R-Done-!!
