Now that the VW is together, I must say. That is a true disappointment. Don't think I have ever taken a loss like I am about to take tomorrow when I call the customer. Not only a non-repair, $500.00 out of my pocket for the tooling. I think I may stay a bit longer and get drunk. Wish I knew what I missed. No marks on pistons, with cams out was able to check leak down. Took my time checking, double checking, triple checking. End result, dead cylinders 4 and 5.
OUCH!!!!

No marks on pistons ? Maybe, The owner was triing to get a Farfiggnuegen feeling on the beach and St Pauli Girl ingested some water and jugs don't come up as high as they once did because she bent some rods ? Maybe with luck cylinders are just washed down with stuck rings and needs a little shot of ATF in each to sit and soak overnight? Hydraulic lash adjusters pumped up too much during prelubing sometimes reluctant to bleed down and let valves seat or selective size valve lash shims need a lot of thinner ones installed now.. Where's the cylinder leakage now seem to be going, and how high are your pistons at each of their TDC levels in relation to each other? Now that the VW is together, I must say. Are the camshafts solid one piece precision ground or hollow 3 piece pressed together Turds with a 2 foot long Farfignueggen Phazer bolt?Attached FilesLast edited by Witsend; 01-30-2015, 07:47 AM.Comment

Well, after a little bit of cooling off time, and then tearing down the VW. I am going to chalk it up to a learning experience. An expensive one, but oh well.
1st of all, I let this new experience messing with a brand I don't mess with get under my skin. It messed with my mind all week. This whole concept of timing chains on the back was a new experience. It did not help that our large platform Tranny jack was an awkward fit and the trans slipped off 1/2 way down. I caught it, but the extrusions off of the back tore my belly button open, and created some bruising that was a sight to be seen. Guess I need to start doing sit ups so my belly does not get in the way.
I ordered the timing tool kit on Friday afternoon, payed a bunch for it to be delivered Monday morning. Also bought complete short and long triple squares to have full sets.
I worked too hard to try to figure out why the cam phaser bolt backed out (never found a reason why). The intake cam was stopped just a few degrees passed TDC #5, the most open valves were #1. Video bore scope showed no marks on pistons. With the cams out, cylinder leak down test passed after tapping most intake valves (I had assumed I had knocked some carbon loose).
This whole waste of time could have easily been bypassed if I followed the instructions to a T. An early step in removing cam timing cover is "remove intake manifold", I looked at why, and found it to remove plastic clip for water tube. I short cut the procedure and removed the clip with a long hemostat. If I would have removed it, I would have seen the bent valves through the ports very early.
Now with the head off, still can not see any mark on pistons. Both cylinders 4 and 5 intake valves have the slightest mark of contact that I could not see with bore scope with mirror.
Now that I am tooled up, might as well start bringing some of these in.

Ouch, If rocker cover off, couldn't bent valves be foreseen by a ridiculous amount of clearance between the cam and the shim in bucket or cam follower? Just make sure no piston is at TDC , and slowly turn the cam and check for huge clearance, worth a look before you even take the cam caps off to inspect for scoringThis whole waste of time could have easily been bypassed if I followed the instructions to a T. Mitchell wiring diagrams are the best, just hate how much more I have to zoom in , then use the Grabber feature to slide . Might be worth the shop getting a 60 inch TV or a projection TV for a monitor. Maybe Snappy could develop a mini projection TV , the size of a flashlight using cooler to the touch super bright LED technology that could use the white background at back of a tool box hutch to project the entire Mitchell wiring diagram onto a shop's wall from either a PC or Verus.Comment
